An AI-generated image, falsely portrayed as a real labor strike outside Samsung's headquarters, recently spread across social media, highlighting the growing challenge of digital misinformation. The image appeared just as South Korea's legislature was considering new laws to expand labor protections.

The Viral Hoax: A Fabricated Protest

On August 3, 2025, a compelling image surfaced on Facebook showing a large crowd of protesters with signs demanding Samsung's chairman engage in collective bargaining. The post's caption linked the scene to the controversial "yellow envelope bill," proposed amendments to the Trade Union and Labor Relations Adjustment Act. The ruling Democratic Party has indicated its intent to pass the legislation.

This bill aims to broaden worker protections and reinforce their right to collective action, as reported by The Korea Times (archived link). However, it has faced strong opposition from business groups. Industry leaders, cited in The Chosun Daily, warned that the changes could lead to more strikes and production delays (archived link).

The image was widely shared in conservative-leaning Facebook groups and on the South Korean forum Ilbe, fueling heated commentary. However, as of August 5, there were no official reports of any such protest at Samsung's headquarters.

Uncovering the Source: A Hypothetical Illustration

A keyword search revealed the image's true origin. It was first published in a July 2025 report by the South Korean news outlet Edaily. The article used the image to illustrate a hypothetical scenario of potential labor unrest if the "yellow envelope bill" became law (archived link). The caption explicitly stated the image was generated using ChatGPT.

Telltale Signs of an AI Fake

A closer look at the image reveals several inconsistencies typical of AI-generated content. These include distorted and nonsensical lettering on protest signs, misshapen hands and fused limbs on the individuals, and an unnatural, repetitive pattern in the crowd's formation. While generative AI technology is advancing quickly, spotting these visual clues remains a key method for identifying fakes.

Furthermore, the buildings and overall environment depicted in the image do not match the actual location of Samsung's headquarters in Seoul, as confirmed by Google Street View imagery (archived link).

This incident is one of many false claims that have been debunked, where AI-generated images and videos are passed off as authentic events.
