A Two Billion Dollar Milestone

Since its launch in May 2023, the ChatGPT mobile app has achieved a monumental milestone, pulling in over $2 billion in global consumer spending on both iOS and Android platforms. This data, reported by Appfigures, firmly establishes the application as the undisputed leader in the paid AI app market, showcasing its extraordinary appeal and user willingness to pay for advanced AI capabilities on the go.

Explosive Growth in 2025

The app's financial success isn't just steady; it's accelerating at a phenomenal rate. In 2025, consumer spending on the ChatGPT app has skyrocketed by an incredible 673 percent when compared to the same timeframe in the previous year. This surge in revenue is matched by a massive increase in its user base. The app has been downloaded 318 million times so far this year, which is 2.8 times the number of installations seen during the equivalent period in 2024, demonstrating its rapidly growing market penetration.

A Global Footprint with US Dominance

While ChatGPT's reach is global, its user base and revenue sources show distinct regional patterns. India leads the world in lifetime installations, accounting for 13.7 percent of all downloads. However, the United States is by far the most profitable market. American users contribute nearly 40 percent of the app's total global revenue. The financial commitment of the U.S. market is clear, with the average spending per download exceeding $10. This is in stark contrast to other regions, such as Germany, where users spend only about 5.3 percent of that amount on average.

How ChatGPT Stacks Up Against Rivals

When measured on a per-user revenue basis, ChatGPT's dominance becomes even clearer. The app generates an average of $2.91 in lifetime revenue for every installation. Its closest competitor, Anthropic's Claude, brings in $2.55 per install. The gap widens significantly with other rivals. Grok, from Elon Musk’s xAI, averages a mere $0.75, while Microsoft's Copilot app lags far behind at just $0.27 per install.

Why Grok Is Lagging Behind

Analysts suggest that Grok's sluggish performance can be attributed to its delayed entry into the mobile app marketplace. Although the AI was introduced in late 2023, its dedicated iOS app wasn't released until January 2025, and the Android version followed even later in March. This significant delay likely gave established players like ChatGPT an insurmountable head start. In 2025 alone, ChatGPT has generated $1.35 billion in mobile revenue, a figure that is approximately 53 times greater than Grok's $25.6 million, highlighting an enormous performance gap.
