Google Photos AI Finds Your Best Video Moments Automatically
Google Photos is currently releasing a powerful new feature called “Key Moments,” which uses artificial intelligence to help you find and share the most compelling parts of your videos.
Say Goodbye to Video Filler
Let's be honest: most of our personal videos contain a lot of “filler” content, making them less interesting than they could be. Except for truly special occasions, videos longer than a few seconds are rarely re-watched or shared. If you tend to record long videos, the new Key Moments feature could save you a significant amount of time and effort by automatically finding the highlights for you.
How Key Moments Works
When you watch a video in Google Photos, the Key Moments feature will automatically mark the most engaging sections directly on the video's timeline. You can then jump straight to these moments and, with a single tap, save them as individual, shareable clips.
These highlights are presented with an interactive ‘chip’—a small, clickable label. Tapping the chip gives you the option to either save that moment as a separate clip or remove the marker from the timeline if you disagree with the AI's selection.
The AI Behind the Magic
The feature is another example of how Google Photos is increasingly using AI to handle tedious everyday tasks. According to Google, the Key Moments AI identifies joyful, nostalgic, or visually rich moments within any video that is at least ten seconds long. While the exact length of each highlighted moment isn't specified, Google’s examples suggest segments are around five seconds long, perfect for sharing.
Rollout for Android and iOS Users
Key Moments is set to roll out this September, and some Android users have already reported gaining access to the feature. Apple users will need to wait a little longer, but Google has confirmed that support for iOS devices is coming soon.
A Smart Feature in a Competitive Market
Automatically highlighting key moments in videos isn't an entirely new idea. Competing applications, such as GoPro Quick, offer similar functionality. This feature also brings to mind the ill-fated Google Clips smart camera, a product designed specifically to automatically find and record interesting moments.
However, Key Moments stands out as a genuinely useful feature that requires virtually no effort or technical expertise from the user. While it may seem like a simple addition, the concept of a smartphone app being able to detect and isolate a moment of nostalgia in a video would have been impossible just a few years ago.
