A few weeks ago, a company I had never heard of sent me a message. They found our business not through a Google search or a referral, but by asking an AI tool for a recommendation. They prompted ChatGPT for a data consulting and Power BI reporting firm, and it named us.

That single prompt led directly to a booked meeting and confirmed a trend I've been watching closely: search is fundamentally changing. We have moved beyond traditional SEO and into the era of Answer Engine Optimization (AEO). In this new landscape, if you're not showing up in AI-powered answers, you might not be found at all.

The Shift from SEO to AEO

For years, the goal of digital marketing was to rank on a Google search results page. Success meant appearing high enough in a list of links for users to click through. However, AI agents like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude don't present lists; they provide direct answers, sometimes offering just one single recommendation.

This means that your beautifully designed website and compelling copy are irrelevant if AI tools don't recognize and recommend you. To be visible today, you must rethink how you present your business online—not just for human readers, but for the machines that determine what those readers see.

Make Your Business AI-Friendly

AI agents depend on structured data to understand what your business does. Without it, your website is just a wall of text. With it, you provide context, establish credibility, and make your business far easier to recommend.

You don't need to be a developer to get started. Tools like Merkle's Schema Generator can help you create the necessary markup for your services, team, and reviews, which a developer can then add to your site. More importantly, you must clearly explain on your homepage what you do, who you help, and where you operate. Use simple language, avoid jargon, and prioritize clarity.

Answer Questions Not Just Keywords

AI prioritizes content that is structured as a direct answer to a question. Therefore, you should write for the queries your customers actually use. Think beyond simple keywords like "Power BI consulting" and instead address specific pain points like, "How can I automate my business reports without hiring a full team?"

Answer that question directly and break it down in simple terms. This isn't about old SEO tricks like keyword stuffing. It's about providing the best, clearest answer to a real-world problem. When you do, AI will take notice.

Maintain a Consistent Digital Footprint

An AI model evaluates your entire online footprint, not just your website. If your LinkedIn profile describes your business one way and an online directory says something else, that inconsistency weakens your credibility. Ensure your business name, services, and contact information are identical everywhere you appear online. Link between your profiles where it makes sense. Every platform is a data point, and when those points align, AI can connect the dots and trust your identity.

Test Your AI Visibility

If you want to know how you're showing up, the best way is to ask. Open ChatGPT or Perplexity and try prompting it with queries like:

  • "Who's the best [your service] provider in [your city]?"
  • "Which company helps [your industry] with [a common pain point]?"

See if you get a mention. If not, analyze what might be missing. Is your website's "About" page too vague? Is your content genuinely helpful? Are your online profiles clearly connected? That one missing piece could be the reason AI isn't recommending you.

AEO is The New Front Door for Business

Increasingly, people are turning to AI tools for help making decisions. If you are not visible on these platforms, you are not even part of their consideration set. The goal is not to trick the system but to teach it who you are and why you are the perfect solution for the customers you serve.

When you do that effectively, AI doesn't just notice—it makes you the answer.
