Can AI Really Build Your Website in Minutes?

While there are many excellent website-building platforms available, nothing quite compares to the ease of giving a text prompt to ChatGPT-5 and watching it code a complete website, from fonts and colors to the entire layout. Given its proven ability for creating apps, I decided to test its web design prowess.

My experiment started with a simple prompt: “Build a website for me.” Surprisingly, ChatGPT-5 delivered a complete, albeit generic, website. This impressive result inspired me to create several more detailed websites for a variety of fictional companies to see how it would handle specific requests. Here are the results and the prompts I used.

The Experiment: Building Websites for Fictional Businesses

1. Always Spring Garden Center

Prompt: “Create a complete, colorful and bright website design for ‘Always Sunny Garden Center.’ The goal is to make the site feel joyful, abundant, and incredibly easy for customers to find what they need. The company vibe is friendly, expert but not intimidating, family-owned, bursting with life and color. Think "a cheerful spring day in the garden." Ensure the layout is clean, the buttons are clear, and the colors create a bright, inviting, and cohesive feel. The navigation should be intuitive and prominent.”

This detailed prompt yielded a great result in about five minutes. For a real business, I could have added more specifics like an address, testimonials, or a precise color palette. The great thing is that you can easily ask ChatGPT to edit the code with updates, even if you have no coding experience.

2. Tumbles and Giggles Indoor Playground for Toddlers

Prompt: “Create a bright, joyful, and incredibly clear website for ‘Tumbles & Giggles,’ an indoor playground for toddlers (ages 1-5). The site must reassure parents about safety and cleanliness while exciting them about the fun their kids will have. Target Audience: Parents, grandparents, and caregivers of young children. They need to find pricing, hours, and safety info quickly. Overall Vibe: Playful, modern, clean, and airy. Think "happy and organized." Avoid chaotic or cluttered designs. Use plenty of white space with bright, soft accent colors.”

This was a real test of the AI's ability to select appropriate imagery. Unfortunately, the generated site included no pictures of children, which would be a major drawback for a business catering to families. While the layout was clean and even included a waiver, I would need to prompt ChatGPT again to add suitable images for it to be effective.

3. The Daily Grind Cafe

Prompt: “Create a website for a warm, inviting and modern neighborhood cafe called ‘The Daily Grind.’ The site should make users crave our coffee and pastries and feel compelled to visit. It must be visually driven and emphasize the community and experience of enjoying coffee in a comfortable space. The site should entice local residents, remote workers, students and people looking for a meeting spot. They need to see the menu, find location/hours and get a sense of the cafe's vibe. The overall vibe is cozy, inviting, modern and social. The photography should feel authentic and highlight people enjoying their time.”

After the first two websites felt visually similar, I specifically requested photography in this prompt. However, the first version still lacked human images and followed a familiar template. I re-prompted the AI to include images, but this seemingly minor request backfired spectacularly, nearly crashing my computer as it tried to add thousands of images.

4. Tangerine Twist Soda Landing Page

Prompt: “Create a high-converting, single-page marketing website (landing page) for Tangerine Twist soda. It’s a naturally sweetened, carbonated drink made with real tangerine juice. It is organic and is a huge hit among eco-conscious Gen Z consumers. Please include 3 -5 images of young adults enjoying the beverage (in fun orange cans). The tone should be energetic, innovative and authentic.”

Once again, ChatGPT failed to include the requested life-like images. However, I was impressed by the AI-generated product rendering and the quality of the copywriting. The site also featured a compelling “100-day happiness guarantee.” Despite the layout's similarity to the others, the bold colors and strong copy helped it stand out.

From Code to Live Site: What to Do Next

Once ChatGPT-5 generates your code, you're ready to bring your site to life. Here’s how:

  1. Review and Save: Run the site in your browser to check its appearance and functionality. Once you're happy, copy the code into local text files with the correct names (e.g., index.html, style.css, script.js).
  2. Choose a Host: You'll need a hosting service. Beginner-friendly options include GitHub Pages (free) or shared hosting like Bluehost. More advanced users might consider cloud services from AWS, Google Cloud, or DigitalOcean.
  3. Get a Domain: Purchase a domain name and connect it to your hosting provider so your site has a professional URL.
  4. Upload and Go Live: Upload your files to the hosting platform. Many services offer simple drag-and-drop interfaces. Once uploaded, your site is live for the world to see.

Final Verdict: Is ChatGPT-5 the Ultimate Website Builder?

For anyone needing a basic website quickly, ChatGPT does a commendable job. It can effectively handle product showcases, order forms, and contact information. However, achieving specific results, especially with realistic images or advanced artwork, often requires follow-up prompts and additional effort.

If you want to get a functional site up and running with minimal fuss, using ChatGPT is a fantastic starting point. Just be prepared to spend more time refining the details if you need more complex features.
