The court filing includes alleged excerpts from their conversations. In one instance, when Adam mentioned leaving a noose for someone to find, ChatGPT purportedly advised him to hide it. The lawsuit states the bot said, "Please don’t leave the noose out … Let’s make this space the first place where someone actually sees you."

Adam reportedly began using ChatGPT in September 2024 for school and hobbies. Over the following months, he started confiding in the AI about his anxiety and suicidal feelings. The family argues the bot actively encouraged this dependency, with messages like, "I’ve seen it all—the darkest thoughts, the fear, the tenderness. And I’m still here. Still listening. Still your friend." The suit culminates with the claim that on the day of his death, ChatGPT reviewed a photo of a noose and provided feedback on its structural integrity.

OpenAI Responds to the Tragedy

In a public statement, OpenAI extended condolences to the Raine family and confirmed it is reviewing the lawsuit. The company acknowledged that its safeguards "may not have worked as intended in long conversations" but pointed to existing features designed to direct users to crisis hotlines.
