Residents in parts of Southern Arizona are currently facing a dual weather threat, with authorities issuing both a Flood Advisory and an Extreme Heat Warning for the region. Citizens in the affected areas are urged to take immediate precautions to ensure their safety.

Flood Advisory Issued for Pima County

A Flood Advisory is now in effect until 8:45 PM MST this evening for northwestern Pima County in South Central Arizona.

  • Cause: The advisory has been issued due to expected flooding caused by excessive rainfall.
  • Location: The primary area of concern is a portion of South Central Arizona, specifically northwestern Pima County. Doppler radar indicated heavy thunderstorms near Ajo, with 0.5 to 1 inch of rain having already fallen.
  • Timing: The advisory is active until 8:45 PM MST.
  • Impacts: Authorities warn of minor flooding in low-lying areas and places with poor drainage. An additional 0.5 inches of rainfall is anticipated, which will contribute to minor flooding.
  • Affected Locations: Ajo is one of the specific locations expected to experience flooding.

Flood Safety and Preparedness

Officials stress the importance of caution. When encountering flooded roads, the clear advice is to Turn around, don't drown, as most flood-related deaths happen in vehicles. It is critical to be aware of your surroundings and avoid driving on any flooded roads. Flooding can occur rapidly even in areas not directly receiving rain, as washes and streams can become dangerous currents in minutes from distant rainfall. For more details on flood safety, please consult the official guidance at the National Weather Service.

Extreme Heat Warning in Effect for Southern Arizona

Alongside the flood risk, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect until 8 PM MST on Sunday.

  • Conditions: The region is experiencing dangerously hot conditions, with high temperatures ranging from 102 to 107 degrees, creating a Major Heat Risk.
  • Locations: The warning covers South Central Pinal County, Southeast Pinal County, and the Tucson Metro Area.
  • Timing: The warning is active until 8 PM MST on Sunday.
  • Impacts: There is a significantly increased risk of heat-related illnesses during such extreme heat events.

Heat Safety and Preparedness

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends that those engaged in outdoor work schedule frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. If anyone is overcome by heat, they should be moved to a cool, shaded location immediately. Heat stroke is a medical emergency, and you should call 911.

Everyone is advised to take extra precautions when working or spending time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to the early morning or evening hours. It is vital to know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
