Phil Collins shared a health update shortly before the AI images started to circulate

If you've scrolled past some unsettling images of Paul McCartney visiting a frail Phil Collins in the hospital, you're not alone. These pictures spread rapidly online, causing a stir among music fans. However, the emotional scene depicted was nothing more than a digital fabrication.

The Viral Hoax: Spotting the AI Fakes

This week, a series of images showing The Beatles legend Paul McCartney comforting the Genesis frontman in a hospital room went viral. The post featured pictures of McCartney hugging Collins and seemingly playing a song for him on a guitar as hospital staff looked on.

The AI images in question

Despite their convincing appearance, these images have been thoroughly debunked as products of artificial intelligence. Eagle-eyed observers quickly pointed out several tell-tale signs of digital manipulation:

  • McCartney, who famously plays left-handed, is shown holding the guitar in a right-handed position.
  • The guitar in the image has only five strings instead of the standard six.
  • A closer look reveals that McCartney's strumming hand is missing its fifth finger, a common flaw in current AI image generation.

The Real Story: Phil Collins' Health Update

The timing of this AI-generated hoax was particularly sensitive, as it followed a genuine health update about Collins. Before the fake photos circulated, unfounded rumors had begun to spread online that the 74-year-old musician was receiving end-of-life care.

A representative for Collins moved to quell the alarming speculation, assuring fans that he was "nowhere near death." It was clarified that Collins was indeed in the hospital, but for a planned knee surgery, as reported by The Independent. His spokesperson did not provide further details on the operation.

A History of Health Struggles

This recent surgery is the latest in a series of health challenges for the "In The Air Tonight" singer. His struggles with mobility trace back to a 2007 spinal injury sustained while on tour with Genesis, which dislocated vertebrae in his neck.

Collins retired in 2019

Despite two subsequent surgeries in 2009 and 2015, Collins was left with severe and persistent nerve damage. The injury also caused numbness in his hands, which tragically forced him to retire from drumming in 2019, as he could no longer hold the drumsticks. By this time, he was often seen using a cane to aid his mobility. In 2021, Collins revealed he was also battling diabetes, adding to his ongoing health concerns.

Collins on His Musical Future

His health has understandably taken a toll on his creative drive. In an interview with Mojo magazine earlier this year, Collins confessed that he is no longer "hungry" enough to create new music.

"I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens," he shared. "But I’m not hungry for it anymore. The thing is, I’ve been sick, I mean very sick."
