New research presented at the Goldschmidt 2025 geochemistry conference has unveiled how machine learning can enhance classic optical microscopes for soil analysis. According to a report by Phys.org, a team from the University of Texas at San Antonio is developing a method to examine fungal growth in soil, a key indicator that helps farmers optimize their crop strategies.

By using standard optical microscopes, the kind familiar from high school science classes, the cost of this technology remains low, sidestepping the high expense of more modern soil testing methods.

"We're creating a low-cost solution for soil testing that reduces the labor and expertise required, while providing a more complete picture of soil biology," said student researcher Alec Graves. This comprehensive view is vital for land managers, as the presence of fungi can be either a blessing or a curse for their crops.

The Fungal Factor Why It Matters for Crops

The concentration and type of fungi in the soil can significantly impact agricultural success. Beneficial fungi are crucial partners for plants, helping them absorb nutrients, boosting crop yield, and increasing their resistance to disease. However, common farming practices like excessive tilling or fertilization can easily destroy these helpful microorganisms.

On the other hand, harmful fungi can lead to devastating outcomes, causing root rot and drastically reducing yields. If not managed properly, these fungi can ruin a harvest and degrade the soil for future use.

The next phase of development involves integrating their microscope innovation with a mobile robot designed to autonomously detect fungal growth in the field. The team aims to have a device ready for testing within the next two years, promising a significant leap forward for sustainable and efficient agriculture.
