The Alarming Rise of AI Undress Technology

Generative AI has made it shockingly simple to create realistic yet entirely fake images. So-called “undress” apps leverage this technology, allowing a user to upload a photo of a fully clothed person and receive a fabricated nude version. When this technology is used by students against their peers, it becomes a powerful tool for bullying, harassment, and extortion. The ease of access and the perceived anonymity of the internet can embolden individuals to commit acts they wouldn't in the physical world, creating a toxic digital environment within school communities.

Unique Harms of AI Generated Abuse

AI CSAM carries distinct and severe harms. For the victim, the emotional and psychological impact can be devastating, regardless of the image’s authenticity. The public nature of this abuse can lead to profound humiliation, social isolation, and long-term trauma. Unlike traditional forms of abuse, the digital material can be shared infinitely, making it impossible to contain and causing the victim to relive the trauma repeatedly. This creates a unique challenge for both victims and the institutions tasked with protecting them.

Why Schools Must Act Now

Schools are at the epicenter of this emerging crisis. The social dynamics of K-12 education, combined with high rates of smartphone and social media use, create a fertile ground for the misuse of this technology.
