Arrest in Cottonwood Heights

A 45-year-old Cottonwood Heights man, Russell Kenneth Gatrell, was arrested Tuesday amid a disturbing investigation. He was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail facing investigation for five counts of aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor.

FBI Investigation Uncovers Vast Digital Hoard

The inquiry began on June 25 when the FBI's Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force started investigating an individual sharing child sexual abuse material. According to a police booking affidavit, authorities traced 139 illicit files back to an IP address in Cottonwood Heights, which led them to serve a search warrant at Gatrell's residence.

Upon being confronted, Gatrell admitted to authorities that he had been viewing, downloading, and sharing the illegal material from his home.

Scale of the Alleged Collection

Investigators discovered a massive digital storage system at the residence. Gatrell allegedly stored the child sexual abuse material on a network device equipped with approximately 15 hard drives, totaling an immense 280 terabytes (TB) of storage capacity. While Gatrell told investigators he had an "unknown" amount of the material, estimating it could be more than 100 gigabytes, the potential scope is staggering. The police affidavit notes that 280TB could store between 56 million and 280 million photographs, depending on image quality.

The Alarming Use of AI Technology

Beyond collecting existing material, Gatrell was also allegedly using artificial intelligence to create new, lifelike child sex abuse images from stock photos. FBI computer scientists who conducted an initial review of the technology Gatrell was using described it as "incredibly advanced." The affidavit raises the concern that Gatrell was "likely using images of identifiable children from the internet to create this child sex abuse material." The investigation into the full extent of the collected and created material was still ongoing as of Tuesday.
