Recent research from rival AI developers Anthropic and OpenAI offers a fascinating look into how their flagship products, Claude and ChatGPT, are being used in the real world. By analyzing extensive datasets of user conversations, both companies have revealed distinct patterns that suggest these powerful AI tools are carving out very different roles in our daily and professional lives.

ChatGPT The Rise of a Personal AI Assistant

According to a study released by OpenAI, the consumer versions of ChatGPT are predominantly used for personal rather than professional tasks. A staggering 70% of all messages are non-work-related, a significant increase from 53% just a year prior. Conversely, work-related queries have dropped from 47% to just 27% of conversations.

This data points to ChatGPT's evolution into a general consumer product. The most common uses fall into three main categories: seeking practical guidance, writing assistance, and general information gathering, which together account for nearly 78% of all messages. It is important to note, however, that OpenAI's analysis was limited to its consumer plans (Free, Plus, Pro) and did not include enterprise or educational accounts.

When users do turn to ChatGPT for work, they tend to use it more like an advisor or a research assistant for decision support, rather than delegating tasks directly. The most frequent work-related activity is writing, which makes up 42% of professional messages, with most users asking the AI to edit existing text rather than create it from scratch. Interestingly, coding tasks represent a very small fraction of its use, at only 4.2% of total messages, and this category also showed the lowest user satisfaction.

Claude The Professionals Choice for Coding and Automation

In sharp contrast, research from Anthropic shows that its AI, Claude, is heavily favored for work-related productivity. The dominant activities on Claude.ai are mathematical tasks and coding, with coding alone accounting for 36% of interactions. Other rapidly growing professional domains include education, which has grown by 35% since late 2024, and scientific research.

For businesses using the Claude API, the focus is squarely on automation. An impressive 77% of API tasks are automated, indicating that companies use Claude for full task delegation rather than collaborative work. Coding is again the top use case, representing 44% of all API interactions, followed by administrative support and the development of other AI systems.

A Tale of Two AIs Complementary Niches Emerge

The dueling studies from OpenAI and Anthropic suggest that the AI market is beginning to segment. Users are naturally gravitating towards specific models for different kinds of tasks.

ChatGPT is solidifying its position as a personal and exploratory tool, perfect for writing, seeking information, and casual advice. Meanwhile, Claude is becoming the go-to productivity tool for the professional world, excelling in technical fields like coding, research, and business process automation. This market split indicates that these AI giants may be establishing complementary niches rather than engaging in head-to-head competition across the board.
