From ASCII to AI A New Look for Thunder Lizard

What happens when you give an old-school, text-based game a modern graphical makeover using artificial intelligence? Software engineer Jeff Schomay decided to find out. In a recent project, he took his ASCII RPG-style game, "Thunder Lizard," and applied various AI-powered rendering techniques to transform its simple character visuals into dynamic, full-motion graphics. As shared in his detailed blog post, the results are a fascinating look at the future of game development.

The Need for Speed vs High-Fidelity Graphics

For any game, performance is key. Schomay quickly discovered that the "need for speed" is a major hurdle for many current AI renderers, especially for indie developers. While some models could produce fantastic-looking prehistoric landscapes that perfectly fit the theme of Thunder Lizard, they came with a crippling downside. The most visually impressive renderer introduced a four-second latency, making the game completely unplayable. This highlights the classic trade-off between graphical quality and real-time performance.

Finding a Playable Compromise with Fal.ai

After testing several AI models, Schomay had to find a compromise that balanced visual appeal with playability. The ultimate choice was Fal.ai, a model that stood out from the competition. According to Schomay, Fal.ai delivered on several key fronts, offering "very fast generation times, source image adherence, and decent look and feel." This made it the most practical option for bringing his AI-rendering concept to life.

The final AI-powered engine is capable of running the game at 10 frames per second with just 1ms of latency, representing the best available option from Schomay's experiments.

A Glimpse into the Future of AI in Gaming

While the final visuals might not satisfy every pixel peeper, the achievement is significant. Schomay expressed his excitement, stating that "it is amazing to see AI image generation happen in real-time." He is optimistic about the future of this technology but hopes to see future advancements in frame-to-frame consistency to create a smoother visual experience. This experiment serves as a practical example of the growing intersection of AI and game development, a field where major players like Nvidia are also investing heavily with AI-enhanced development tools for their RTX platforms.
