ChatGPT Projects Now Accessible to Everyone

In a significant update, OpenAI has rolled out its ChatGPT Projects feature to all users, including those on the free tier. Previously a premium feature, this move democratizes access to more structured and organized AI-assisted workflows. The expansion makes it easier for a wider audience to manage complex tasks and maintain context across multiple interactions within a dedicated workspace.

The feature is now live for users on the web and Android platforms, with an iOS update expected to follow shortly. This update signals OpenAI's commitment to making powerful AI tools more accessible and functional for its entire user base, not just paying subscribers.

Enhanced Features and Customization

Alongside broader access, the update introduces several key enhancements. Users now benefit from increased file upload capacities. Free users can upload up to five files per project, providing a solid foundation for smaller-scale tasks. The limits increase significantly for paid tiers, with Plus subscribers able to upload 25 files, while Pro, Business, and Enterprise users can manage up to 40 files per project.

Further improvements include new personalization options, allowing users to assign custom colors and icons to their projects for better visual organization. Additionally, memory controls have been refined. Users can now manage ChatGPT's memory on a project-specific basis, ensuring that information from one project does not bleed into another, which is ideal for handling diverse use cases from professional work to personal creative endeavors.

OpenAI Strengthens Codex with Alex Team Acquisition

In a separate but equally important development, OpenAI announced the acquisition of the team behind Alex, a popular AI-powered coding assistant for Xcode. The talented team will be integrated into OpenAI's Codex division to help build the future of AI in software development.

Reflecting on the journey, Alex co-founder Daniel Edrisian noted the initial challenge, stating, “When we started out, Xcode had no AI. Building a ‘Cursor for Xcode’ sounded crazy, but we managed to do it anyway.” He celebrated their success in creating “the best coding agent for iOS & MacOS apps.”

Looking forward, Edrisian expressed his enthusiasm for the new chapter: “It is an honour to continue that work at a much bigger scale at OpenAI, along with the incredibly talented Codex team.” As a result of this transition, the standalone Alex app will no longer be available for new downloads starting October 1. However, existing users will continue to receive support, though no new features will be added.
