Just when the AI world seemed to be catching its breath after OpenAI's recent release of new open-source models, the company has rolled out another set of significant updates. Earlier this week, OpenAI made the popular 'Projects' feature available to all free users, enhancing chat organization. Now, they've unveiled a truly unique tool not found in competing chatbots: the ability to branch conversations.

OpenAI Responds to User Demand with a New Feature

This highly-requested feature originated directly from the user community. Following a call for feature requests from CEO Sam Altman, a user on X named MicahJanke suggested the ability to branch chats from specific points. The idea was to explore different conversational paths without losing the original context or cluttering the main chat. The post gained massive traction, and OpenAI listened, officially announcing the feature's rollout in a direct reply.

This new capability is now live on the ChatGPT web app for all registered users. A simple page refresh should make it available.

How to Use Conversation Branching in ChatGPT

Getting started with conversation branching is straightforward. Under each of ChatGPT's replies, you'll now find a new three-dot menu. Clicking it presents two options: "Branch in new chat" and "Read aloud."

Selecting "Branch in new chat" will open a new browser tab containing your conversation up to that point. A horizontal line clearly marks where the branch began, allowing you to seamlessly continue the chat in a new direction.

These new threads are automatically saved in your history with a title starting with "Branch," making them easy to identify. They appear as separate conversations rather than being nested, but you can use the 'Projects' feature to group an original chat and its various branches together for better organization.

Why Conversation Branching is a Game Changer

This feature is more than just a convenience; it fundamentally changes how users can interact with the AI. It allows you to explore multiple ideas, test different coding solutions, or pursue creative tangents without ever losing your original train of thought. Instead of painstakingly re-establishing context in a new chat, you can instantly fork the conversation from the most relevant point.

This functionality gives ChatGPT a significant edge over competitors like Google Gemini and Anthropic's Claude, which currently do not offer a similar tool. Given its immense utility, it's likely that conversation branching will become a standard feature across major AI chatbots in the near future. For now, it stands as a testament to OpenAI's commitment to user-driven innovation.
