OpenAI is enhancing its flagship AI chatbot, ChatGPT, with a suite of new features designed specifically for teamwork and enterprise use. According to a recent announcement, these updates introduce powerful collaboration tools, expanded app integrations, and robust security enhancements, signaling a clear strategy to deepen its footprint in the business world.

A New Era of Teamwork with Shared Projects

The standout feature is the new "shared projects" mode, which transforms how teams collaborate within ChatGPT. This allows a group to work within a single, persistent conversation where the chatbot retains context over time. Team members can upload documents and files directly to a shared project, enabling ChatGPT to pull from these resources to provide informed and consistent responses.

This is particularly useful for long-term projects involving sensitive client data or documents that require frequent updates. A project creator can easily invite colleagues via link or email, similar to sharing a Google Doc, assigning them either "chat" or "edit" permissions. Early tests show teams are using this for managing proposals, contracts, and maintaining a consistent brand voice across communications.

Initially building on the Projects feature that helps organize individual chats, shared projects are now available for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans, with a rollout planned soon for Go, Plus, Pro, and Free users.

Seamless Integration with New App Connectors

OpenAI has also launched new connectors that allow ChatGPT to pull information directly from a variety of popular third-party applications. The expanded list includes Gmail, Google Calendar, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, GitHub, Dropbox, and Box.

Crucially, ChatGPT can now automatically determine which connector to use without needing a specific prompt, making the experience smoother and more intuitive. According to OpenAI, this new system delivers faster and more accurate responses. For instance, a user can simply ask for a summary of recent project updates, and the chatbot can scan their Gmail to generate a concise list of developments and action items.

This move mirrors a broader industry trend of turning AI assistants into central information hubs. Competitors like Anthropic's Claude and Zoom's AI Companion have also recently upgraded their capabilities to connect with external apps.

Fortifying Security for Enterprise Users

Recognizing the importance of trust and compliance in a business context, OpenAI has integrated significant security upgrades. The chatbot is now certified for several key international standards, including ISO/IEC 27001, 27017, 27018, and 27701. Furthermore, its SOC 2 compliance has been extended to cover Security, Confidentiality, Availability, and Privacy criteria.

Enterprise and Edu account administrators gain more granular control, with the ability to manage which team members can access specific connectors and features. A new optional IP "allowlisting" feature adds another layer of protection, ensuring that ChatGPT only responds to requests originating from pre-approved IP addresses, effectively blocking any attempts from unauthorized locations even with valid credentials.

The Bigger Picture OpenAI's Enterprise Ambition

These updates are a clear indication of a growing focus on the enterprise market by major AI developers. As companies work to commercialize their generative AI tools, the business sector represents a massive opportunity. OpenAI, which already serves over five million enterprise customers, is reportedly developing a workplace productivity platform to rival Google Workspace and Microsoft Office 365.

This strategy is not unique to OpenAI. Anthropic recently achieved a massive $18.3 billion valuation, largely driven by its popularity among business clients. Meanwhile, tech giants like Microsoft and Amazon are positioning themselves as trusted marketplaces for businesses to access a wide range of AI tools from various developers.
