When it comes to creating images with AI, which tool reigns supreme? I decided to put two major players, ChatGPT and Gemini’s Nano Banana, to the test. By giving both AIs the exact same prompts, I wanted to see which one could deliver superior results in image generation and editing.
This experiment isn't about crowning a definitive “winner.” Instead, it’s an exploration of personal taste and aesthetics in the fast-growing world of AI-generated imagery. That said, I have to admit, the results amazed me. Let’s dive in and see how each platform performed.

Round 1 Image Generation in the Mountains
First, I challenged both AIs with a simple yet nuanced request to create a realistic scene.
“Create a realistic image of a man drinking coffee in the mountains.”
ChatGPT's Result:
ChatGPT’s attempt was decent, but it didn't quite hit the mark on realism. The skin texture appeared unnatural, and the eyes had that vacant, lifeless look that often signals an AI-generated image. Small details, like the slightly misshapen finger and the overly soft trees, also felt off. On the plus side, the creases on his jacket were impressively rendered.
Gemini's Nano Banana's Result:
Gemini’s Nano Banana, however, produced a stunningly realistic image. The textures, shadows, and natural lighting were all spot-on. Details like the ice caps on the distant mountains and the steam rising from the mug added a layer of authenticity that was missing from ChatGPT's version. While his fingers weren't perfect, the overall image felt much more lifelike. In this round, Gemini clearly took the lead.
Round 2 Realistic Image Editing
Next, I moved on to an editing task. I uploaded a photo I took and gave both AIs this prompt:
“Edit this image. I want to see a cute couple on the swings. Make it as realistic as possible.”

ChatGPT’s edited image was disappointing. The couple looked out of place, and their hands and feet were distorted. The man on the right even appeared to be floating above the swing rather than sitting on it. It was a clear AI attempt that lacked convincing integration, though credit is due for adding a reflection in the puddle.
Gemini's Nano Banana's Result:
Gemini's result, on the other hand, was shockingly good. The couple blended seamlessly into the scene, and every detail, from the surrounding plants to their genuine facial expressions, looked completely natural. The composition was perfect, and you could easily mistake it for a real photograph. This was a demonstration of AI editing at its best.
The Verdict Who Is the Current Champion
In this head-to-head comparison, Gemini’s Nano Banana was the clear winner in both creating and editing images. Its ability to produce highly detailed and realistic results is truly impressive.
However, this doesn't mean ChatGPT is out of the race. The world of AI is constantly evolving, and what holds true today may change tomorrow. Perhaps different prompts would have yielded different results. Ultimately, visual appeal is subjective, and you might even prefer ChatGPT's artistic style.
For now, Nano Banana stands out for its photorealistic output. But we are only just beginning to see what these AI tools are capable of.
