Kakao is set to revolutionize its flagship messaging platform, KakaoTalk, by integrating OpenAI's powerful ChatGPT directly into the app. According to industry sources, this highly anticipated update is expected to roll out this month, marking a significant step in the company's strategy to weave artificial intelligence into the fabric of daily user communication.

The upcoming feature is designed to provide users with a smooth and intuitive way to interact with AI. Instead of needing to switch to a separate app or browser, users will be able to access ChatGPT-powered conversations directly from the "Chat" tab within KakaoTalk. A dedicated ChatGPT icon is expected to appear in the message input screen, allowing users to start a conversation with the chatbot as easily as they would with any of their contacts. This integration aims to make AI a natural and accessible part of everyday chats. Additionally, sources report that Kakao is exploring the possibility of embedding ChatGPT into the app's native search function, which would further expand the AI's utility across the platform's ecosystem.

Kakao's Vision for an AI-Powered Future

This move aligns perfectly with the vision outlined by Kakao CEO Chung Shin-a. During the company's second-quarter earnings call in August, she hinted at a "comprehensive overhaul" of KakaoTalk, with AI positioned as the central pillar of this transformation. Chung believes that integrating AI directly into the messaging experience will encourage widespread adoption, even among those who have never used an AI service before.

"Even users who have never interacted with AI services before are likely to become curious and engage when they see ChatGPT-generated responses shared within group chats or appear organically in conversations," she stated during the call. The strategy is clear: leverage the platform's massive user base to make advanced AI a mainstream utility.

The Path to Partnership and the Big Reveal

The official unveiling of this collaboration is anticipated at Kakao's annual developer event, “If(Kakao) 2025,” scheduled for September 23. It is expected that the company will provide the first public demonstration of how ChatGPT will be integrated into the KakaoTalk interface and what new functionalities users can expect. The strategic partnership between Kakao and OpenAI was first announced in February, bringing together one of South Korea's most dominant mobile applications and a global leader in AI research. Since then, the two companies have been working together to develop a user experience that is finely tuned for mobile messaging, combining the nuance of human conversation with the power of artificial intelligence. A Kakao official confirmed the company's commitment to this direction, stating, "The final implementation plan is still under review, but we’re committed to making AI assistance an intuitive part of the KakaoTalk experience."
