OpenAI Expands Budget ChatGPT Plan to Indonesia
OpenAI is continuing the global expansion of its affordable ChatGPT subscription, rolling it out in new markets beyond its initial launch in India. The company has now introduced its sub-$5 ChatGPT Go paid plan to users in Indonesia for Rp75,000, which is approximately $4.50 per month.
What is ChatGPT Go
The ChatGPT Go plan serves as a middle-tier option, strategically positioned between the capabilities of OpenAI’s free version and its premium $20-per-month ChatGPT Plus subscription. Subscribers to the Go plan benefit from a significant tenfold increase in usage limits compared to the free tier. This applies to sending prompts, generating images, and uploading files.
According to a statement from ChatGPT head Nick Turley, the plan also enhances ChatGPT's ability to remember previous conversations, allowing for more personalized and context-aware responses over time. Turley also highlighted the plan's success in India, noting that the number of paid subscribers has more than doubled since the launch of ChatGPT Go in the country.
A Direct Challenge to Google
This expansion into Indonesia places OpenAI in direct competition with Google. The move follows Google's recent launch of its own similarly priced AI Plus subscription plan in the same market earlier this month.
Google's comprehensive AI Plus plan provides users with access to its advanced Gemini 2.5 Pro chatbot. The subscription also includes a suite of creative tools for image and video creation, such as Flow, Whisk, and Veo 3 Fast. Furthermore, it enhances features for the AI research assistant NotebookLM, integrates powerful AI capabilities directly into Gmail, Docs, and Sheets, and comes with 200GB of cloud storage, presenting a strong value proposition for users in the region.
