Greece Partners with OpenAI for AI in Schools and Startups

In a landmark move, OpenAI has forged a significant partnership with the Greek government. This collaboration is set to enhance the country's startup landscape and integrate advanced AI tools directly into its educational system.

Bringing AI to the Classroom with ChatGPT Edu

Greece is poised to become one of the first nations to adopt ChatGPT Edu, a version of the popular AI model specifically tailored for educational institutions. A pilot program is scheduled to launch this year, focusing initially on improving AI literacy. The program aims to help teachers increase their productivity and responsibly incorporate AI into their daily work, setting a new standard for technology in education.

Fostering Innovation with a New AI Accelerator

Beyond the classroom, the partnership also includes the launch of a Greek AI accelerator program. This initiative, the first of its kind for OpenAI in Europe with government backing, will support startups that are focused on critical sectors such as education, public services, healthcare, and climate. This program is designed to harness Greece's strong base of talent, as the country has one of the highest percentages of STEM graduates in Europe.

A Strategic Partnership for the Intelligence Age

Chris Lehane, Chief Global Affairs Officer at OpenAI, commented on the historical context of the deal, stating, “From Plato’s Academy to Aristotle’s Lyceum—Greece is the historical birthplace of western education. With millions of Greeks using ChatGPT on a regular basis, the country is once again showing its dedication to learning and ideas.”

Lehane added, “Recognising that nearly 60% of these users are under the age of 35, the Greek Government is opening a new educational chapter that prepares its people to seize the economic opportunities of the Intelligence Age. We are proud to stand alongside Greece as it pioneers how nations can bring AI into education for the next generation.”

This initiative comes as OpenAI continues to innovate, having recently launched its much-anticipated GPT-5 model and two open-weight models. The partnership with Greece marks a strategic step in applying its cutting-edge technology to foster both education and economic growth.
