Portland's iconic Powell’s Books is at the center of a heated debate after releasing new merchandise that was created with the help of artificial intelligence, sparking both public backlash and serious concerns from its workers' union.

The Spark of Controversy

The issue first caught public attention when customers began examining the new merchandise designs. One shopper took to Reddit to ask if the new shirts used AI, pointing out that a design featuring a wolf on a stack of books looked "a little wonky." This observation resonated with others, fueling speculation that the art was generated by AI rather than a human artist.

Powell's Confirms AI Use

In response to the growing online conversation, Powell's Books released a statement on social media acknowledging the use of AI. The bookstore clarified the situation, stating, “We want to acknowledge the concern around the designs of our recent merch. The designs were created by a local artist using Adobe tools, which now include some AI-assisted features.”

Union Voices Long-Standing Concerns

The bookstore's explanation, however, was met with a strong response from ILWU Local 5, the union representing Powell’s workers. The union revealed that this was not a new issue, posting on its own Facebook page that “Powell’s workers have been voicing concerns about the use of AI in these designs for months and company leadership has been unmoved.” This statement suggests a deeper, ongoing disagreement between employees and management over the role of AI in creative work.

A Commitment to Human Creativity?

In its statement, Powell's sought to reassure its customers and the artistic community. “We value the work of human artists and designers, and we remain committed to keeping Powell’s designs rooted in creativity and imagination,” the company wrote. Following the backlash, Powell's also announced it is actively looking for local artists for future collaborations and encouraged interested individuals to reach out. The incident highlights the growing tension between technological tools and traditional artistry, placing a beloved local business at the forefront of a national conversation.
