Snapchat Unlocks AI Image Creation With Imagine Lens
Snapchat is once again pushing the boundaries of social media creativity, this time by diving deeper into the world of generative AI. The company has officially launched a new feature, the "Imagine Lens," which allows users to generate and modify images using simple text prompts. This move marks a significant step for Snapchat, integrating a powerful text-to-image AI generator directly into its popular camera interface.
How the Imagine Lens Works
The new Imagine Lens empowers users to create, edit, and completely remake their Snaps just by typing what they want to see. This is Snapchat's first open-prompt image generation tool, giving users a blank canvas for their imagination. You can enter custom prompts like “create an image of a grumpy cat” or “turn me into an alien” to generate entirely new visuals.
For those needing a little inspiration, the Lens also comes with several pre-loaded prompts to get started. Examples include creative ideas like:
- "Turn me into a four to five panel comic where something unexpected but heroic happens."
- "Make me into a funny caricature."
- "Make this person skydive."
Users can always tap the caption bar to edit a pre-loaded prompt or write their own from scratch, offering endless creative possibilities. These AI-generated images can then be shared with friends, posted to a user's Story, or even shared on other platforms.
Access and Availability
This powerful new creative tool is being offered as an exclusive feature for subscribers. To access the Imagine Lens, users must be subscribed to either Snapchat+ Platinum at $15.99 per month or Lens+ at $8.99 per month. Subscribers can find the Imagine Lens featured prominently at the front of their Lens Carousel or within the "Exclusive" category in the Lens library.
Snap's Broader AI and AR Strategy
The Imagine Lens is the latest development in Snap's ongoing investment in both artificial intelligence and its signature augmented reality technology. While the company has long been a leader in AR, it has been aggressively expanding its AI capabilities to stay competitive.
Earlier this year, Snap announced its own AI text-to-image research model built for mobile devices, and while it hasn't been confirmed if this specific model powers the new Lens, Snap has stated its features use a combination of in-house and leading industry AI models.
This launch follows other recent AI-powered releases, including a standalone Lens Studio app for iOS and web to simplify AR creation and the introduction of its first-ever video generative AI Lenses in March. With the Imagine Lens, Snapchat continues to blend AI and AR, offering its users new and exciting ways to express themselves.
