In the fast-paced world of artificial intelligence, the race for chatbot dominance is heating up. While names like ChatGPT and Gemini often steal the headlines, recent data reveals a surprise contender is growing at an unprecedented rate, shaking up the established order.

The AI Growth Race By the Numbers

A new report from analytics provider Comscore, tracking user activity from March to June, paints a fascinating picture of the current AI landscape. The standout performer was Microsoft Copilot, which saw its user base surge by an incredible 175%, making it the fastest-growing chatbot among the major players.

In comparison, Google Gemini also experienced strong growth with a 68% increase in users. The original market leader, OpenAI's ChatGPT, saw a more modest but still significant increase of 18%. This data highlights a dynamic market where newer entrants are rapidly gaining ground.

User Count vs Growth Rate: A Tale of Two Metrics

However, rapid growth doesn't tell the whole story. When it comes to the sheer number of users, ChatGPT remains the undisputed king. The platform commands an impressive 36.1 million users on desktop and 25.3 million on mobile devices.

Here’s how the competition stacks up in total users:

  • Microsoft Copilot: 23.1 million on desktop and 8.8 million on mobile.
  • Google Gemini: 14.2 million users on mobile.

The data also reveals strong user loyalty for ChatGPT, with over 85% of its mobile users sticking exclusively with the platform. In contrast, users of Copilot and Gemini were found to be more likely to explore alternative AI tools, suggesting they are still experimenting or using different tools for different tasks.

What's Driving Copilot's Explosive Growth?

So, what's the secret behind Copilot's recent success? According to Smriti Sharma, SVP of Custom IQ for Comscore, it comes down to two key factors: ecosystem integration and mobile productivity. "Copilot's mobile growth comes mainly from Microsoft's ecosystem integration and productivity use cases," Sharma told ZDNET. "The emphasis from Microsoft on its mobile-first approach fits well with lightweight productivity tasks."

She also explained that ChatGPT's slower growth rate is a sign of its maturity. "ChatGPT was the first mover, building a very large user base early on," Sharma noted. "That means its adoption curve is further along, and the growth now appears steadier."

The Broader AI Tool Landscape

The AI revolution extends far beyond general-purpose chatbots. The Comscore report, which analyzed 117 different AI tools, also identified other key players gaining significant traction. These include:

  • Canva: The AI design assistant reached 15.1 million desktop users and 7.6 million mobile users.
  • Grammarly: The popular writing aid attracted 5.4 million users on desktop.
  • Octane AI: This AI marketing platform saw 8.3 million users on mobile.
  • Voicemod: The AI voice changer was used by 4.7 million people on desktop.

Mobile vs. Desktop: The Shifting Platforms of AI

The way we access AI is also evolving. The report revealed a 5.3% increase in AI usage on mobile devices, bringing the total to 73.4 million users. Interestingly, desktop AI use saw an 11% dip during the same period, though it still holds a slight edge with 78.4 million users. This trend underscores the growing importance of mobile platforms in the AI space.

As Sharma concluded, "This latest trend shows AI is not just growing, it is exploding. This evolution reflects how quickly consumers are embracing AI as a part of everyday life."
