AI Weaponized for Sextortion Leading to Federal Charges
In a disturbing case highlighting the dark potential of artificial intelligence, an Oakland County man is now facing federal charges for allegedly targeting a social media influencer with a sophisticated sextortion scheme. The case involves the use of AI to generate fake pornographic images, a tactic used to harass and extort the victim.
From DMs to Federal Charges
The victim, Anne Blodgett, a content creator and boudoir photographer from Oregon, found her life turned upside down in 2024. It began when she received a direct message containing a nude photo that looked shockingly real, but it wasn't her. It was a fabricated image, created with AI, sent by an anonymous follower. The image was accompanied by aggressive and taunting messages.
When Blodgett did not respond to the initial messages, the harassment intensified. The situation quickly escalated from taunts to direct sexual assault threats, followed by a series of AI-generated nude photos. This chilling case of AI-driven sextortion prompted Blodgett to take action and work with law enforcement.
Authorities eventually identified the anonymous follower as 36-year-old Josh Stilman of Commerce Township. On Tuesday, the FBI arrested Stilman and raided his home. He has been charged with cyberstalking and interstate threats to extort.
A Victim's Powerful Response
Refusing to be silenced, Blodgett made it clear that she would not tolerate such threats. She powerfully stated her resolve in response to the harasser's actions.
"If you’re going to start making sexual assault threats at me, that is something I take very seriously, and that’s when I was like absolutely not, I’m going to come after you for that," Blodgett said. "Do not threaten me because I am a woman, and I will find out everything about you and ruin your life."
True to her word, she has been collaborating with the FBI to ensure justice is served. Following Stilman's arrest, Blodgett expressed her relief and gratitude.
"I’m deeply grateful to the FBI for treating this with the seriousness it deserves. Since speaking publicly about this situation on my social media platform, I’ve received many messages from women who have experienced similar harassment. Their stories are a powerful reminder of how widespread and deeply damaging this problem is. Their solidarity has been incredibly moving and has helped me feel less alone during this process."
Justice and a Wider Problem
The investigation suggests that Blodgett may not be the only victim. According to court documents referenced by FOX 2 Detroit, it appears that other individuals may have been targeted by Stilman as well. This case serves as a stark warning about the weaponization of AI for personal attacks and criminal activity.
Despite the serious nature of the charges, Stilman has been released on bond. The case continues to unfold, shining a light on the urgent need for legal and social frameworks to address the growing threat of AI-facilitated harassment.
