OpenAI Helps Veterans Transition with Free AI Tools

Transitioning from military service to civilian life presents a unique set of challenges, and OpenAI is stepping up to help with a new, tailored initiative. The company's own veteran employees have spearheaded a program designed to equip fellow service members with powerful AI tools to navigate this critical period.

A Personal Mission to Support Fellow Veterans

The project stems from the personal experiences of veterans working at OpenAI. They recognized how a tool like ChatGPT could have significantly eased their own transitions.

"For me, this idea started with how much I rely on ChatGPT every day to learn, to organize my work, and to think through decisions," explained Vikki Lampton, an OpenAI employee. "Using it has made me reflect on my own transition out of the Army in 2013 and how very different that experience could have been if a tool like ChatGPT existed back then."

This initiative aims to provide the support that wasn't available before, addressing the needs of the roughly 200,000 service members who transition to civilian life each year.

Free AI Tools to Ease the Transition

At the core of the initiative, OpenAI is offering a free one-year subscription to ChatGPT Plus for all U.S. service members and veterans who are within 12 months of their retirement or separation date. This premium access provides faster response times and priority access to new features, ensuring veterans have a reliable tool at their disposal.

In addition to the software, veterans also get access to a customized getting-started video on the OpenAI Academy to help them make the most of the platform from day one.

A Library of 100 Prompts for Every Stage

The most unique part of this program is a curated list of 100 ChatGPT prompts specifically crafted by OpenAI's veteran employees. These prompts are designed to tackle common hurdles faced during the transition process, from practical job-seeking tasks to navigating new social and professional environments.

The prompts are thoughtfully organized into three key phases: Pre-transition, Transition, and Post-transition. They cover a wide range of topics, including translating military skills for a civilian résumé, preparing for job interviews, and even understanding corporate office politics.
