AI Image Fools Joy Behar On The View

A discussion about artificial intelligence on The View took a comical and awkward turn when cohost Joy Behar mistook an AI-generated woman for her colleague, Sunny Hostin.

An AI Experiment on Live TV

The moment unfolded during an interview with guest Hasan Minhaj. As the panel discussed the anxieties surrounding AI, Minhaj revealed he had conducted a small experiment before the show. "For me, right now, AI doesn't scare me for what it is right now, it's what it could be," he explained. "I went on Google Gemini and I just typed in, 'Hasan Minhaj The View,' and I was like, what do you got? This is what it came up with."

An image appeared on the screen behind the hosts, showing a rendered version of Minhaj at a table labeled "The View," though it bore no resemblance to the actual set. Behind him sat two AI-generated women of color. Minhaj described the image as "dystopian" for its inaccurate depiction.

A Case of Mistaken Identity

While the other hosts laughed at the strange rendering, Behar pointed confidently at the screen. "But, that's Sunny. Sunny's in it," she declared, identifying one of the AI figures as their cohost Sunny Hostin, who was absent from the episode.

The reaction from the panel was immediate. "No, that's not Sunny," Ana Navarro corrected her. Sara Haines buried her head in her hands, while moderator Whoopi Goldberg looked out at the audience in disbelief. Alyssa Farah Griffin tried to smooth over the gaffe, adding, "It's not, that's the weird part." Unconvinced, Behar could be heard muttering, "It looks like her," as the segment continued.

The Panel's Broader Views on AI

This on-air mix-up highlights a topic that the panel, particularly Whoopi Goldberg, has addressed before. Goldberg has long cautioned audiences about the potential dangers of AI and smart devices.

In a previous episode, she expressed her distrust of Amazon's Alexa. "You know she is listening. I don't want her in the house," the actress stated. "I don't want anything that is smart enough to lock me out of my house, I don't want anything that won't let me drive my car. When you watch science fiction, it's right there. They tell you: this is the future."
