A new rumor suggests that Google is considering its popular messaging app as the next platform to feature powerful image generation software. This AI integration, codenamed Nano Banana, could soon bring creative image editing tools directly into your chats.

A Sneak Peek into Google Messages' AI Future

Speculation is growing after prominent tipster AssembleDebug and Android Authority delved into the code of the latest Google Messages app. They uncovered evidence pointing to the arrival of the Nano Banana AI image generator. The most significant finding suggests that the feature is being tested within personal chats.

According to the report, a Nano Banana icon appears in the top navigation bar when a user long-presses an image within a conversation. While the icon itself is not yet functional, its presence alongside the delete icon in a test build indicates that development is underway. The code also contains signs that this feature could extend to group chats, setting the stage for collaborative and chaotic photo editing sessions among friends.

The Growing Reach of Nano Banana

This potential move is part of a broader strategy by Google to embed its Nano Banana AI across its ecosystem. The company has already started rolling out the tool to more of its services. For example, Nano Banana is now appearing in NotebookLM, allowing users to generate images to complement their notes and research materials in various styles like Watercolor, Anime, and Retro Print.

Google Lens is also getting an upgrade with a new "Create" button, which allows users to take a photo and instantly modify it using a text prompt powered by Nano Banana. A similar feature is planned for Google Photos, giving users a powerful way to edit photos directly from their library.

Why Google is Betting on AI Image Generation

Google's push to integrate Nano Banana into more apps seems to be driven by its remarkable success. The AI image generator reportedly attracted 10 million new users to the Gemini app within just a few weeks of its launch. In that brief period, users created over 200 million images, with the prompt to transform a person into a figurine proving to be the most popular. By bringing this successful tool to Google Messages, the company aims to further enhance user engagement and make its messaging platform a more creative and interactive space.
