Google Photos to add AI feature for creating memes from photos

Google Photos may soon offer a playful new way to engage with your pictures, as reports indicate the development of an AI-powered feature designed to turn your photos into popular memes. This potential tool, dubbed “Me Meme,” highlights Google's ongoing effort to integrate creative and personalized AI functionalities into its suite of applications.

How the AI Meme Generator Works

The discovery of the “Me Meme” feature came from an Android application package (APK) teardown of Google Photos version 7.51.0. According to the findings, the tool is designed to let users select one of their photos and combine it with a well-known meme template. The AI then works to blend the two elements into a new, shareable image. An onboarding page for the feature reportedly encourages users to “Turn yourself or your family and friends into your favourite memes,” perfect for sharing in group chats and on social media. However, it's important to note that the feature is currently inactive and not accessible, even for beta testers, suggesting it is still in the early stages of development.

Other AI Enhancements on the Horizon

Beyond the fun meme generator, another APK teardown of Google app version 16.42.61 uncovered a practical improvement for the Google Gemini app. This update appears to enhance the voice input function by allowing users to lock the microphone on. This would give users more time to think and formulate their voice prompts without the microphone automatically shutting off after a brief pause, addressing a common frustration and improving the overall user experience for voice commands.

A Word of Caution

While these discoveries are exciting, Google has not officially confirmed the “Me Meme” feature or the Gemini voice input update. Features uncovered in APK teardowns are often experimental and can be altered or canceled before ever reaching the public. Therefore, these reports should be considered speculative until an official announcement is made by Google. If launched, these updates would continue the trend of embedding AI deeper into everyday digital tools, expanding the creative options in Google Photos and refining usability across Google's services.
