A viral prank circulating on TikTok has made its way to Southern Oregon, causing a series of false 911 calls and prompting a stern warning from local law enforcement about the misuse of emergency services.

The Viral AI Prank Hitting Southern Oregon

The prank involves teenagers using AI-generated images to fool family members and friends. These fabricated images typically show a disheveled, homeless-looking man seemingly inside their home or standing at their door. The realistic nature of these images has led unsuspecting recipients to believe a real intruder is present, causing them to panic and call 911 for help.

This week, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) responded to multiple such calls. In every case, law enforcement arrived to find the reports were hoaxes. One alarming incident, heard over emergency scanners, involved a mother calling dispatch after her teenage daughter texted her about letting a homeless man into the house. The mother’s panic escalated when she was unable to reach her daughter by phone afterward.

While the teens involved in the recent incidents were given warnings, the JCSO is making it clear that such actions can lead to serious legal trouble. In Oregon, this type of prank could be classified as "initiating a false report," a Class A misdemeanor.

The legal ramifications don't stop there. Under state law, offenders can be forced to repay the costs associated with the emergency response and investigation. If a prank is serious enough to trigger the deployment of a SWAT team, the charge comes with a mandatory minimum jail sentence of 10 days.

Straining Emergency Services and Public Safety

This trend isn't just a local issue; law enforcement agencies across the country have issued similar warnings. Jackson County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Aaron Lewis emphasized the dangerous impact these pranks have on the community.

"Every time our deputies respond to these pranks they are pulled away from real emergencies," Lewis stated. "We respond to these calls as if someone’s life might be in danger." He added, "It’s not just a waste of resources; it puts the public and our deputies at risk."

A Call for Parents to Talk to Their Teens

JCSO officials are urging parents to discuss the situation with their teenagers, especially those active on TikTok. The key message is to educate them on the power of AI to create convincing fake content and the severe real-world consequences of online pranks. Emphasizing the critical importance of emergency services and the dangers of misusing them is paramount.
