Shopping for shoes online often comes with a big question: how will they actually look on me? Google is stepping in to solve this problem with its latest innovation in online retail. The company has officially expanded its AI-powered virtual try-on technology to include footwear, making it easier than ever to visualize how a new pair of sneakers, heels, or sandals will look on your feet before you even click 'add to cart'.

How Does Google's Virtual Try-On Work?

The process is designed to be simple and seamless. While browsing shoes on Google Shopping, you'll see a "try it on" button on eligible products. Using this feature, the AI can superimpose the selected shoes onto an image of you.

And for those concerned about privacy, there's no need to send Google pictures of your feet. The system works with a full-length picture of yourself. In demonstrations, the AI capably transforms the shoes a person is already wearing into the new pair they're viewing. This capability is built on Google's advanced generative AI, which, as seen in previous applications like the Doppl app, can generate realistic body parts like feet on its own to create an accurate visualization.

Expanding the AI Wardrobe

This new feature for shoes is a logical extension of Google's broader strategy to revolutionize online shopping with AI. The company first began testing its virtual try-on tool for clothing in May, starting with items like shirts, dresses, and pants. After a successful trial, the feature was rolled out to all users in the US in July.

Alongside the launch for shoes, Google also announced that its virtual try-on for apparel will be expanding internationally to Australia, Canada, and Japan in the coming weeks. This move signals Google's confidence in the technology and its commitment to making online shopping a more interactive and confident experience for users worldwide.
