OpenAI Unveils Sora 2 and a New Social App

OpenAI has officially announced the launch of Sora 2, the next generation of its impressive audio and video generation model. The announcement came with a major surprise: a new, linked social media app also named Sora. This platform is designed to compete directly with short-form video giants like TikTok, allowing users to generate and share AI-powered videos in an algorithmic feed.

What's New with the Sora 2 Model

While access to the new model is currently limited, OpenAI has showcased examples that highlight significant improvements over its predecessor. The most notable enhancement in Sora 2 is its superior grasp of real-world physics, which results in far more realistic videos. Public demonstrations include complex scenes like a beach volleyball game, skateboarding tricks, and gymnastic routines, all rendered with a new level of physical accuracy.

OpenAI explained in a blog post that earlier models would often distort reality to fulfill a prompt. For instance, a missed basketball shot might magically teleport into the hoop. With Sora 2, however, the model understands consequences; if a player misses, the ball will accurately rebound off the backboard, demonstrating a more grounded understanding of cause and effect.

The Cameo Feature Personalizing AI Video

The Sora app's standout feature is called "cameos." This function allows users to upload a video-and-audio recording of themselves to verify their identity and create a digital likeness. Once created, they can insert this "cameo" into any AI-generated scene.

Furthermore, users can grant permission for their friends to use their cameos, making it possible to create collaborative videos featuring multiple real people in fantastical, AI-generated environments. OpenAI believes this social-first feature is the best way for people to experience the full potential of Sora 2.

A TikTok-Style Feed and Algorithm

Once a video is generated within the Sora app, it can be shared to a public feed that functions much like TikTok or Instagram Reels. To personalize this feed, OpenAI's algorithm will consider several factors, including a user's activity within the Sora app, their location via IP address, past engagement with posts, and even their ChatGPT conversation history (though this can be disabled).

To address safety, the app includes parental controls managed through ChatGPT. These controls allow parents to set limits on infinite scrolling, disable algorithmic personalization, and manage direct messaging permissions for their children.

Availability and Monetization

The Sora iOS app is now available for download in the U.S. and Canada, with plans for rapid international expansion. While the social platform is currently invite-only, OpenAI has indicated that ChatGPT Pro users will be able to access the Sora 2 Pro model without an invitation.

The app will be free to use at launch. OpenAI's current monetization plan is to potentially charge users for generating extra videos during periods of high server demand.

Addressing Safety and Misuse Concerns

The launch of a social platform brings significant user safety challenges, an area where OpenAI has previously faced scrutiny with ChatGPT. The ability for users to grant access to their digital likeness can be easily abused. A trusted friend could potentially generate deceptive or harmful content, and the problem of non-consensual AI-generated videos remains a serious issue with few specific laws in place to hold platforms accountable.
