Sora App Update Unveils Pet Cameos and Android Version

OpenAI's viral AI video generation app, Sora, is set to receive a major wave of updates. Since its late September launch, the app has rocketed to the top of the App Store charts in the U.S. and Canada and is now introducing powerful new creation tools, enhanced social features, and an eagerly awaited Android version.

Create AI Cameos of Your Pets and More

In an announcement on X, Sora head Bill Peebles revealed that new creation tools are arriving within days. The most exciting addition is the expansion of the "cameo" feature to include pets and inanimate objects. Soon, you'll be able to create AI characters of your dog, a favorite stuffed toy, or almost anything else.

The “cameo” feature originally allowed users to create AI personas of themselves from a reference video, which could then be shared for others to use in their own video creations. To handle the expected influx of new non-human characters, Peebles noted, “we’re updating the generation UI to show the latest trending cameos in real time.”

New Video Editing and Social Features

Beyond character creation, Sora is introducing basic video editing capabilities. The first tool will allow users to stitch multiple clips together, with more advanced editing features planned for future updates.

The social experience is also getting an upgrade. The app will soon feature new ways to connect with friends and communities, potentially including dedicated channels for specific groups like universities, companies, or sports clubs.

Addressing User Feedback and Improving Performance

OpenAI is actively listening to its user base. The company announced it is working to reduce the excessive moderation of generations, a common complaint from users who found the current system too strict. Alongside this, efforts are underway to improve overall app performance and stability.

Sora's Android App is Coming Soon

While the app is currently available for pre-registration on the Google Play Store, an official launch date for Android has not been set. However, Peebles confirmed that the Android version is “actually coming soon,” signaling that the wait is nearly over for a large segment of new users.

This series of updates comes as Sora continues to demonstrate impressive growth. According to data from Appfigures, the app has amassed around 2 million downloads in less than a month, a remarkable figure given it remains invite-only and is limited to the U.S. and Canada.
