So, how exactly will this new feature function? Walmart is integrating ChatGPT’s "Instant Checkout" capability, which allows shoppers to browse and buy products from the retailer without ever leaving the AI chat interface.

According to a statement from Walmart, this partnership will empower customers and Sam’s Club members to "plan meals, restock essentials, or discover new products simply by chatting." For example, a user could type a query like "suggest a gift for the ultimate sports fan" or "show me the best 4K TVs under $300," and ChatGPT will present relevant Walmart products directly within the conversation for immediate purchase.

The company is calling this evolution "agentic commerce," a model where the AI transitions shopping from a reactive task to a proactive one by learning and anticipating customer needs.

How Does This Compare to Amazon?

Walmart is not the only retail titan exploring AI-driven shopping solutions. Amazon has its own innovative feature called "Buy for Me" available in its mobile shopping app.

This tool allows shoppers to purchase items from brand websites that are not directly sold on Amazon, all while staying within the Amazon app's ecosystem. As Amazon explains, when a customer finds a product they want, they can tap the "Buy for Me" button. Amazon then handles the purchase from the third-party retailer on the customer's behalf, using the payment and shipping information already stored in their Amazon account.
