In the ongoing conversation about AI's impact on search, speculation has often outpaced data. However, a new research report from AdLift, titled “ChatGPT Traffic: It’s Small, But It Sticks”, provides a clear, data-driven look at how users are actually moving from large language models to websites.

The Reality of AI-Driven Traffic Volume

The findings challenge the popular notion that AI is about to replace traditional search engines overnight. The report, which analyzed user data across six major sectors, reveals a counterintuitive truth: ChatGPT is not a traffic floodgate.

In every industry examined, traffic originating from ChatGPT accounted for less than 4 percent of the volume seen from Google Organic search. This indicates that for now, AI chat is a supplementary tool rather than a primary replacement for search.

Quality Over Quantity The High-Intent User

While the volume may be low, the story changes dramatically when looking at user engagement. The research highlights a crucial distinction: the intent of visitors from ChatGPT is exceptionally high.

• In five out of the six sectors studied, visitors arriving from ChatGPT spent significantly more time on-site compared to those coming from Google.
