Evernote's illustration for their AI Transcribe tool

Evernote has faced some challenges recently, including staff reductions and price increases after its acquisition by Bending Spoons. However, the platform is now introducing some exciting new capabilities. One notable recent addition is support for multimodal AI transcription, which has received positive initial feedback.

Versatile AI Transcription Capabilities

The new AI Transcribe feature can be accessed directly within the main Evernote application and also through a dedicated web tool.

Users can upload audio, video, or image files for transcription. The tool also includes a built-in recorder for capturing audio directly. For added convenience, the web version allows users to paste a video URL, and the system will automatically transcribe its content.

In a test, the tool efficiently transcribed a 55-minute Brazilian Portuguese podcast episode with accuracy in under a minute. After transcription, the text can be copied, downloaded, or edited.

Supported Formats and Limitations

The AI Transcribe service supports files up to 100 MB or 60 minutes long. For video content, it handles MP4 and MOV files, making it suitable for transcribing recordings from platforms like Zoom.

For image-based transcription, Evernote highlights its utility in digitizing handwritten notes from sources like whiteboards. The supported image formats are JPG and PNG.

Subscription Model and Free Tier

It is important to note that Evernote is strongly encouraging users to subscribe to its paid plans. For those not extensively using Evernote for other purposes, relying on it for more than occasional transcription could become costly.

The current free plan limits users to 50 notes, one notebook, a maximum note size of 200 MB, and access on a single device. Paid plans begin at $14.99 per month or $129.99 per year.
