Wuling Starlight EV A New Electric Impala Contender
Recent discussions, such as those surrounding Tesla alternatives, highlight a noticeable gap in the availability of mainstream electric sedan options for consumers in North America. However, this situation may not be permanent. General Motors already has a well-suited, five-passenger electric sedan on the market in China, prompting the intriguing question: could this be the foundation for a new electric Chevrolet Impala?
Meet the Wuling Starlight EV A Potential Game Changer
The vehicle in question is the updated 2025 Wuling Starlight EV, poised for its debut in China. It boasts an impressive CLTC range of over 315 miles, which typically translates to approximately 255 miles under EPA testing standards. The sedan features a 2,800 mm wheelbase, remarkably close (within half an inch) to that of the 2007 Chevrolet Impala. Furthermore, it is an inch and a half wider, giving the Starlight EV dimensions akin to the classic Impala and ample room to comfortably accommodate four to five American adults.
Envisioning GMs Electric Sedan as a Chevy Impala
Imagining the Wuling Starlight EV with Chevrolet branding isn't too much of a stretch. A concept rendering, reportedly generated by ChatGPT, depicts the Starlight EV in metallic black with Chevy badging. The result looks convincingly like what one might expect a modern electric Impala to be.

Whats New in the 2025 Wuling Starlight EV Refresh
According to reports from GM Authority, the refreshed Wuling Starlight EV, representing the second generation of its all-electric variant, is undergoing several updates to align with Wuling's new brand identity. The exterior has been refreshed, and entry-level models will now come standard with new 17-inch multi-spoke black wheels. The available color palette has been streamlined to the three most popular choices: Curtain Black, Shining Gold, and Shining White.
Inside, the Starlight EV receives significant enhancements. These include the newest Wuling steering wheel, an all-new dashboard featuring more high-quality soft-touch surfaces, updated front door panels, and a redesigned center console. The vehicle will also incorporate the latest version of GM's Chinese Ling OS operating system.
Powertrain Choices and the US Market Question
These updates will first appear on the all-electric Wuling Starlight EV before being implemented on the plug-in hybrid (PHEV/EREV) version. The PHEV variant is particularly noteworthy for its promised range of 1100 km (approximately 685 miles) on a single tank of fuel and a full charge. Considering the current surge in hybrid vehicle popularity, one might wonder if this PHEV model is the one GM should consider bringing to the US market.
