Cinesite Launches TechX to Pioneer Generative AI in Creative Industries

VFX and animation studio Cinesite has launched TechX, an internal unit focused on researching and developing applications of generative AI technology for content creation. The initiative also seeks to foster collaboration in these innovative areas with other studios, filmmakers, and technology developers.

Leadership Vision for AI Integration and Collaboration

Michele Sciolette, CTO of the Cinesite group of VFX and animation studios, stated, "While we fully recognize the many open questions and challenges associated with generative AI technologies, Cinesite will proactively explore how these technologies can be harnessed to serve artists, developers and producers working in the VFX, animation and immersive industries. TechX is ready to collaborate closely with our existing network of clients, solution providers and other interested parties. In combination with many other key R&D initiatives across our group, TechX represents a critical element in our AI strategy, ensuring our incredible artists have the best possible tools to continue delivering the exceptional work we are known for."

Expert Team to Spearhead TechX Initiatives

Reporting to Sciolette, the TechX team will be spearheaded by gen AI lead Andrew McNamara, known for his work on “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” He is joined by gen AI 2D supervisor Alexey Kuchinski, whose credits include “The Family Plan,” and gen AI tech supervisor and software developer Johan Valfridsson.

Cinesite's Impressive Portfolio and Industry Standing

Cinesite boasts an impressive portfolio of recent projects, including Alex Garland’s “Warfare,” the Michael Jackson biopic “Michael,” Amazon’s “G2O” starring Viola Davis, and Paramount Animation’s “Smurfs” film directed by Chris Miller. The studio is also responsible for the animation of Andy Serkis’ “Animal Farm,” set to screen next month at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival.

Operational Framework and Artist Empowerment

TechX will operate independently from active shows, and Sciolette will also oversee an AI advisory council comprised of members from across the Cinesite group. McNamara commented, “With artists at the forefront, these transformative new tools have the potential to accelerate the creative process.”

Securing Future Growth with Significant Funding

Signifying strong financial backing, the Cinesite group recently secured $215 million in funding. NatWest Corporate Bank spearheaded this financing round for Cinesite, with participation from the studio's existing banking partners, Barclays and Santander.
