In a creative initiative at The School at St. George Place in Houston ISD, first-grade teacher Sadiya Ishaq is using ChatGPT to turn her students' childhood dreams into vivid, realistic images. These AI-generated visuals depict the young learners as they might appear in their chosen professions, bringing their future selves to life right before their eyes.
From Journals to Digital Realities: The Creative Process
The students' dreams are as diverse and imaginative as they are. One aspiring scuba diver declared, "I want to discover the sea." Another child aims to become "a Youtuber." Young Hermes has his sights set on neurology, thoughtfully explaining, "If anybody breaks their brain I can fix it."
Initially, the children documented their dream jobs in journals, complete with drawings of themselves as nurses, engineers, and artists. But Ms. Ishaq decided to elevate this exploration.
"I took a little photo of you guys, and I put it in AI in ChatGPT, and I made images of your future self," Ishaq shared with her excited class. This project, drawing inspiration from a social media trend known as "career doll," has struck a chord with students, parents, and the wider school community.
The Unveiling: An Emotional Journey for Students and Parents
The reveal of the AI-generated images was met with immediate and profound emotion. Kayla, who dreams of being a doctor, wiped away a tear as she saw her future professional self. The strikingly realistic quality of these AI portraits has impressed everyone involved.
"It's so believable that can be them in the future. This can be my reality," remarked one parent, reflecting on how these AI projections surpassed the traditional crayon drawings of her own childhood.
Beyond the Image: A Teacher's Purpose-Driven Project
For Sadiya Ishaq, who has dedicated 10 years to teaching, this project carries a purpose that extends beyond simple fun and engagement.
"Our school is also 50% Title One school, and a lot of our students don't have certain role models around the community," she explained. Ms. Ishaq, who knew she wanted to be a teacher from the age of seven, became emotional as she spoke about her own inspiration. "When you just asked what I wanted to be when I grow up, and I thought about my mom and that was my role model," she shared, highlighting the importance of such figures in a child's life.
Capturing Aspirations: Voices and Visions for a Lifetime
To add another layer of personalization, the teacher recorded each student articulating their career choice and the reasons behind it. She then generated a QR code for these voice recordings and printed it on each student's AI-generated picture of their future self.
Laila, with aspirations of becoming a singer, recorded her heartfelt reason: "When I grow up I wanted to be a singer because I can sing from my heart." She then beautifully belted out the iconic line, “This girl is on fire.”
The project resonated deeply with parents, offering them a new perspective on their children's dreams. Maya's father, Noe, was visibly moved upon seeing his daughter's image as a police officer. "My baby wants to be a police officer," he said with emotion. Maya's reasoning was simple yet powerful: "Cuz I can help the community."
For young Hermes, the aspiring neurologist, the AI image is more than just a picture; it's a cherished memento. When asked what he planned to do with his image, he replied, "I'm gonna keep it for the rest of my life." He wants to remember "myself when I was a kid" and think about "my teacher who made it for the whole class."
