Bloomberg Greenlights ChatGPT Use for Its Newsroom
Global business news and information behemoth Bloomberg is encouraging its journalists to use generative artificial intelligence platforms such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT for story research and publishing.
A New Directive for the Newsroom
According to people with knowledge of the directive, Bloomberg News editor-in-chief John Micklethwait encouraged staff earlier this year to use third-party chatbots, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, in their daily work. The sources were not authorized to speak publicly about the internal communication.
A Strategic Shift in AI Integration
The approach marks a significant shift from the news publisher’s earlier use of AI, which was focused on story summaries and other product-led initiatives. Now, the company is integrating AI directly into the production of its journalism, a service highly trusted by traders and with the power to move global markets.
How Journalists Will Use AI
AI is now being used by Bloomberg journalists and editors for a variety of tasks. These include conducting research, workshopping headlines, summarizing documents, and translating copy. This move positions Bloomberg with a more liberal AI policy compared to many other major news organizations. Bloomberg declined to comment on the new policy.
