Korean entertainment powerhouse CJ ENM is making a bold move into the future, staking its claim as a leader in the next generation of content creation. At a recent industry event in Seoul, the company behind global hits like Parasite and Queen of Tears unveiled a comprehensive strategy to integrate artificial intelligence into every facet of its production pipeline.

A New Era for K-Content: The AI Strategy

Celebrating its 30th anniversary, CJ ENM hosted the "K-Content Meets AI" talk, where executives laid out their vision for revolutionizing the industry. The goal is no less than a complete transformation of how content is made, from initial idea to final distribution.

"We are applying AI across the entire content value chain — including planning, production, distribution, and marketing — to expand AI content production across genres and formats," explained Shin Keun-sup, CJ ENM’s chief strategy officer. He emphasized that this approach is key to "secure next-generation IP."

Unveiling Proprietary AI Production Tools

To power this vision, CJ ENM showcased two groundbreaking AI systems built in-house:

  • Cinematic AI: This system is tailored for narrative projects like films and dramas. It addresses one of the biggest hurdles in AI video—consistency—by integrating image, video, sound, and voice while automatically processing 3D characters and environments. This ensures a seamless and coherent visual output.

  • AI Script: Functioning as an AI agent for IP discovery, this tool analyzes market trends and consumer data to unearth promising stories. It goes a step further by suggesting the best formats for adaptation, leveraging a deep, cross-lingual understanding of literary language that the company says surpasses general AI models.

Meet Cat Biggie: The First 100% AI-Generated Animation

The centerpiece of the announcement was the premiere of "Cat Biggie," the company's first fully AI-produced animation. This charming, non-verbal series tells the story of a cat who unexpectedly becomes a father to a baby chick.

The production statistics are staggering. A small team of just six specialists created 30 two-minute episodes in only five months. This is a massive leap in efficiency compared to traditional 3D animation, where a single five-minute short can take up to four months to produce. Baek Hyun-jung, who led the project, noted that the team used their Cinematic AI to convert characters into 3D data, which allowed them to master the complex movements required for animation. "Cat Biggie" is set for a global YouTube launch in July.

The Future is an AI-Powered Global Studio

This is just the beginning for CJ ENM. The company plans to leverage its success with "Cat Biggie" to expand into AI-powered films and dramas within the year. The ultimate ambition, as stated by Shin, is to establish CJ ENM as a "global AI studio."

This push into AI also highlights the broader industry's need to adapt. A policy discussion at the event underscored the necessity for clear guidelines, copyright and data protection laws, and government support to navigate the new technological landscape responsibly. As a major force in the global rise of Korean culture, CJ ENM's strategic investment in AI signals a significant shift for the entire entertainment world.
