It has been identified online since at least 2023, appearing on meme websites such as Imgur and 9GAG in April 2023 before its wider dissemination on social media. Crucially, the photograph was generated using artificial intelligence (AI). The AI detection tool Hive Moderation reported a 99.8% probability that the image was AI-made, and it was thoroughly debunked during its initial circulation.

How the Fake Photo Spread and Resurfaced

The AI-generated image was shared extensively across platforms like X (formerly Twitter) (archived versions one, two, three), Threads (archived), Facebook (archived), and TikTok (archived). Even public figures were caught out; actor Mark Ruffalo issued an apology in January 2024 after sharing such fake images, including the one in question. He wrote, "Sorry Folks. Apparently these images are AI fakes. The fact Trump was on Epstein's plane and what Epstein was up to is not." The image's resurgence around June 2025, despite prior debunking, is thought to be connected to a public feud between Trump and Elon Musk. Musk posted on social media around that time, claiming Trump appeared in Epstein's files, likely reigniting interest in related (mis)information.
