A significant number of American adults are now using the generative AI tool known as ChatGPT. However, a surprising one in five admit they have never even heard of it, according to new survey results from the Pew Research Center.

The survey reveals that 34% of US adults have used OpenAI's gen AI tool. This adoption is highest among younger demographics, with 58% of adults under 30 reporting usage. The numbers decline with age: 41% for those aged 30 to 49, 25% for individuals 50 to 64, and just 10% for those 65 and older.

Education level also shows a strong correlation. About half of adults with bachelor's or post-graduate degrees have used ChatGPT. In contrast, only 33% of those with some college experience and 18% of those with a high school diploma or less have engaged with the tool. (It's worth noting that Ziff Davis, CNET's parent company, initiated a lawsuit against OpenAI in April, citing alleged copyright infringement related to its AI systems.)

The Rapid Rise of ChatGPT and AI Alternatives

The adoption of ChatGPT and similar generative AI tools has seen dramatic growth over the last couple of years. ChatGPT quickly gained widespread popularity after its launch at the end of 2022, becoming a familiar name. The Pew survey confirms this trend, indicating that the percentage of American adults using ChatGPT has nearly doubled since July 2023.

However, ChatGPT isn't the only such tool available. Other major tech companies have developed their own large language models, including Google's Gemini and Meta's Llama.

How Americans Are Using Generative AI Tools

The Pew survey, which involved a panel of 5,123 adults surveyed between February 24 and March 2, offers insights into how people are utilizing these AI tools. These platforms can perform various tasks, from composing documents to providing answers much like search engines (though their accuracy may vary). Among employed adults, 28% reported using ChatGPT for work-related tasks. Additionally, 26% stated they had used it to learn something new, while 22% used it for entertainment.

Workplace AI Adoption Challenges and Social Perceptions

Despite growing usage, the integration of AI in professional environments isn't without concerns. Other recent Pew findings highlighted that many American workers have doubts about using AI in their jobs and expressed worries about the potential effect it would have. Furthermore, research suggests that even as AI becomes more common in the workplace, there can be social repercussions, as colleagues and managers may judge those who admit to using AI.

The Uninformed Twenty Percent Who Hasnt Heard of ChatGPT

Of course, not everyone is embracing these new technologies. The Pew data shows that 20% of adults have heard nothing at all about ChatGPT. This lack of awareness is most pronounced among those over the age of 65, where 33% are unfamiliar, and among individuals with a high school diploma or less, with 34% in this group having no knowledge of the tool.
