Phoebe Gates, the younger daughter of Bill Gates, and her Phia cofounder, Sophia Kianni, are leveraging the power of AI, specifically ChatGPT, to enhance their marketing efforts. They shared that their strategy involves studying viral videos to "reverse engineer" the formula for their own content. Kianni emphasized this approach, stating, "You should not be starting anything from scratch. The internet exists for a reason."
Decoding Viral Success with AI
During an episode of "The Burnouts," a podcast Gates cohosts with Kianni, the duo detailed their marketing strategies for their fashion tech startup, Phia. Gates explained that they meticulously search social media for standout videos.
"Then we'll make an Excel sheet: These are really good videos, here's why this video was good, and then we'll reverse engineer how to make that video," Gates said. "A lot of times, even for our simple founder videos, we're reverse engineering other content that we've seen do really, really well."
The ChatGPT-Powered Workflow
Kianni elaborated on how they use ChatGPT, a popular AI tool, to model their founder videos on successful examples. Her process involves transcribing viral videos using the AI chatbot and then analyzing the transcripts to understand their effective elements.
"I was able to break down, OK, what was the hook, how did they start the video, what was the middle, and then how did they end it. Then I turned that transcript into, like, I wrote a description of Phia, then I put that into ChatGPT, and I asked it, 'Can you turn this script into one that works for Phia?'" Kianni explained.
The Power of Not Starting From Scratch
Kianni believes that understanding the "patterns" behind viral content is crucial for marketing success. Her advice is clear: "You should not be starting anything from scratch. The internet exists for a reason."
This innovative approach from the Phia cofounders is part of a larger trend. Many individuals and businesses are increasingly incorporating AI tools like ChatGPT into their daily work and personal lives. Gates herself stated, "I use AI almost every single day, and it supercharges me."
AI's Growing Role in Business and Life
The adoption of AI is widespread. For instance, major financial institutions like Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley are using AI-driven tools to enhance productivity. Meanwhile, everyday users are turning to ChatGPT for brainstorming and even as a form of therapy substitute.
Phia's Genesis and a Father's Advice
Gates and Kianni, who were roommates at Stanford University, launched Phia in April. Their platform is designed to help users find the best clothing deals by comparing prices across 40,000 sites.
In the podcast's premiere episode, Gates shared an interesting tidbit: her father, Bill Gates, insisted she finish college before fully committing to a business, a path different from his own. "They were very much like, 'You need to finish your degree; you don't just get to, like, drop out and do a company.' Which is so funny because my dad literally did that," Gates remarked.
Bill Gates also mentioned in April that his daughter did not seek his financial backing for Phia. "I would have kept her on a short leash and be doing business reviews... Luckily, it never happened," the Microsoft cofounder said.
