This week, Alibaba is making waves with a series of major AI advancements, pushing the boundaries in creative content, medical diagnostics, and the digital arts. The company's latest developments include a powerful new multimodal model for image generation, a life-saving tool for early cancer detection, and a strategic partnership set to transform Japan's legendary manga industry.

Next-Gen AI for Creators: Introducing Qwen VLo

Alibaba has unveiled Qwen VLo, a sophisticated multimodal AI model that takes a significant leap beyond its predecessor. Designed for superior content understanding and generation, Qwen VLo delivers enhanced accuracy and consistency for tasks involving both Chinese and English inputs.

A standout feature is its progressive generation approach, where the AI systematically builds and refines an image in stages. This results in outputs with remarkable coherence and visual quality, giving users greater flexibility and precise creative control over the final product.

A man in a black hat reads a newspaper on the subway next to a woman in red sunglasses and a Husky dog. The Statue of Liberty is visible out the window. Prompt: Generate a photo in which a man wearing a black hat is reading a newspaper on the subway, next to him is a beautiful young woman wearing red sunglasses, and there’s also a Husky dog. The subway window shows the Statue of Liberty, and the subway station sign displays ‘Qwen VLo’.

Qwen VLo empowers users with direct image generation and editing functionalities. It can handle complex requests like replacing backgrounds, adding new subjects, transferring artistic styles, and making intricate modifications based on open-ended instructions. The model also excels at detection and segmentation, showcasing its deep understanding of both visual and textual contexts. It can even creatively reinterpret inputs, turning a simple cartoon into a photorealistic image.

You can try out the new model, which is currently in preview, on Alibaba’s Qwen Chat platform.

AI in Healthcare: A New Frontier in Cancer Detection with GRAPE

Addressing a critical global health challenge, Alibaba’s DAMO Academy has developed an AI tool called GRAPE (Gastric Cancer Risk Assessment Procedure with Artificial Intelligence). Gastric cancer (GC) is the world's fifth most common cancer and the fourth deadliest, making early detection essential for improving survival rates.

GRAPE is a deep-learning framework that analyzes 3D non-contrast CT scans to detect and segment gastric cancer. A recent study highlights its incredible effectiveness: GRAPE significantly outperforms human radiologists, increasing sensitivity by 21.8% and specificity by 14.0%. Impressively, the AI tool also successfully identifies cases of early-stage GC that were initially missed by human experts.

Looking ahead, DAMO Academy will collaborate with Zhejiang Cancer Hospital to deploy GRAPE for widespread gastric cancer screening across the Zhejiang and Anhui provinces.

Revolutionizing Manga: Alibaba Cloud and and factory Join Forces

Alibaba Cloud has entered a strategic partnership with and factory, a Tokyo-based digital manga developer, to inject AI-driven innovation into Japan’s manga industry.

In this collaboration, and factory will serve as Alibaba Cloud’s official “Manga Partner,” providing invaluable industry experience. In return, Alibaba Cloud will supply the advanced cloud infrastructure and AI technologies needed for this digital transformation.

The two companies will co-develop AI-powered tools to boost efficiency and creativity in manga production. These tools will assist with tasks like automated background illustration, intelligent storyboard creation, auto-coloring, animation conversion, and even automatic translation. The goal is to empower creators and publishers while expanding manga’s global reach.

Further cementing their commitment, the partners are launching a virtual Manga x AI Innovation Lab to explore new industry trends. Additionally, and factory will migrate its IT infrastructure to Alibaba Cloud to harness its scalable and secure computing resources for future business growth.
