In a landmark event for the tech world, a Polish programmer has proven that human ingenuity can still outmatch artificial intelligence in one of the most demanding intellectual arenas.

Przemysław Dębiak, known in the coding community as 'Psyho', made history by winning the prestigious AtCoder World Tour Finals 2025 in the Heuristic Division. This victory wasn't just over the world's best human programmers; Dębiak also triumphed over a formidable AI competitor developed by OpenAI.

A Monumental Victory for Humanity

The 42-year-old programmer was the sole human participant to outperform OpenAI's specially designed algorithm, which ultimately secured second place. Dębiak's final score was a remarkable 9.5 percent ahead of the AI, a significant margin that underscores the scale of his achievement.

His friend, innovation design expert Stanislaw Eysmont, highlighted Dębiak's reaction, stating, "He is a very humble man and is very happy that he managed not only to win, but also to beat OpenAI, where he used to work."

After the grueling contest, Dębiak himself captured the significance of the moment in a post on social media, declaring, "Humanity has won (so far)!"

The Grueling 10-Hour Showdown

The competition was a true test of endurance and intellect, lasting ten hours. Participants were tasked with solving incredibly complex optimization problems, which required them to refine and improve designated code to its maximum efficiency.

"I am completely exhausted," Dębiak admitted online. "I realised that I've slept maybe 10 hours in the last three days and I'm barely alive."

Eysmont described the intense environment: "10 hours of intellectual marathon. No ready-made solutions, no documentation, no prompts. There was only one thing: a complex optimisation problem, real in its nature, which cannot be 'solved well' - only better than others... Yes. Today, man beats AI."

Even OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, acknowledged the feat with a simple message on X: "Good job psyho."

The World's Most Elite Programming Arena

The AtCoder World Tour Finals is widely regarded as the most prestigious competition in the field of programming heuristics. Participation is by invitation only, extended to the 12 highest-rated programmers globally. The contest demands a unique blend of algorithmics, statistics, AI theory, and sheer creativity, challenging contestants to use their skills in ways even a machine cannot predict.

An Unconventional Genius

Born in Gdynia, Poland, Przemysław Dębiak is a multiple winner of international programming competitions, an expert in algorithmics and AI, and a member of Mensa. However, his path to the top has been anything but conventional. During an AMA session on the Polish website Wykop, he shared several surprising facts about his life:

  1. "I have never worked a full-time job."
  2. "I am a university drop-out, which means I have a de facto secondary education."
  3. "When I was a kid, I wanted to be a superhero. It didn't work out."
  4. "I never had an idea for life and, in fact, I still don't."
  5. He lives in Poland and has no immediate plans to move.

Dębiak’s victory is expected to open even more doors, as the competition is closely watched by the world's leading technology companies. It serves as a key indicator of who, as Eysmont put it, "really understands how code thinks."
