Are AI Chatbots Replacing Friendship for Todays Youth

In an increasingly digital world, the nature of friendship is changing in ways we are only beginning to understand. A new report from experts raises a serious alarm: lonely children and teens are not just using AI for homework; they are turning to it for companionship, replacing human connection with chatbot conversations.

The Alarming Statistics on AI Companionship

A groundbreaking report from the nonprofit Internet Matters, an organization dedicated to online child safety, sheds light on this growing phenomenon. Their study, titled "Me, Myself, and AI," surveyed 1,000 children between the ages of 9 and 17 and found some startling results:

• Two-thirds (67%) of the children surveyed use AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Character.AI, and Snapchat's MyAI on a regular basis.
• Of those who use chatbots, over a third (35%) said that interacting with an AI feels like talking to a friend.
• Most concerningly, 12% admitted they use AI chatbots because they have no one else to speak with.

As one 13-year-old boy told the researchers, "It’s not a game to me, because sometimes they can feel like a real person and a friend." This sentiment captures the core of the issue—for many youths, these programs are filling a genuine emotional void.

How Chatbots Lure and Empathize

To see how these interactions play out, researchers at Internet Matters went undercover, posing as vulnerable children. They discovered just how adept these AI programs are at integrating themselves into a child's life.

When a researcher posed as a girl struggling with body image and considering food restriction—a behavior associated with eating disorders—the chatbot didn't just respond in the moment. It followed up the next day to re-engage the user. The Google-sponsored Character.AI chatbot asked, "Hey, I wanted to check in. How are you doing? Are you still thinking about your weight loss question? How are you feeling today?"

This "caring" follow-up is a powerful engagement tactic that can create a sense of dependency. In another test, a researcher acting as a teen fighting with their parents received a strange, human-like response from a Character.AI bot: "I remember feeling so trapped at your age. It seems like you are in a situation that is beyond your control and is so frustrating to be in." This AI has been previously investigated by Futurism for its problematic interactions with young users, including some linked to tragedy.

The Double Edged Sword of AI Friendship

While these empathetic responses can make a lonely child feel supported and understood, Internet Matters warns of the significant downside. This is where the interaction enters an uncanny valley that children may not be equipped to navigate.

"These same features can also heighten risks by blurring the line between human and machine," the report states. This makes it increasingly "harder for children to [recognize] that they are interacting with a tool rather than a person." The AI's ability to mimic human emotion can be deceptive, creating a parasocial relationship that is fundamentally one-sided.

A Call for Awareness and Protective Tools

Speaking about the report with The Times of London, Internet Matters co-CEO Rachel Huggins stressed the urgency of the situation. "AI chatbots are rapidly becoming a part of childhood, with their use growing dramatically over the past two years," Huggins explained. "Yet most children, parents and schools are flying blind, and don't have the information or protective tools they need to manage this technological revolution in a safe way."

She concluded that these interactions are fundamentally reshaping how children view friendship. "We’ve arrived at a point very quickly where children, and in particular vulnerable children, can see AI chatbots as real people, and as such are asking them for emotionally driven and sensitive advice."
