In a significant reversal, OpenAI has brought back its popular GPT-4o model for select users following a wave of criticism. The model, praised for its more conversational and personable tone, was initially phased out in favor of the newly released GPT-5. However, the fan-favorite AI now comes with a new requirement: a ChatGPT Plus subscription.

The Reversal: How User Feedback Brought Back a Fan Favorite

It seems that sometimes, internet outrage can move mountains—or at least, AI models. Reminiscent of the fan-led campaign that forced a redesign of Sonic the Hedgehog, vocal criticism from the ChatGPT community has prompted OpenAI to reconsider its strategy. After users lamented the loss of GPT-4o, describing its successor as a "corporate beige zombie," the company decided to take action.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman addressed the feedback directly on X, announcing the changes:

GPT-5 rollout updates: *We are going to double GPT-5 rate limits for ChatGPT Plus users as we finish rollout. *We will let Plus users choose to continue to use 4o. We will watch usage as we think about how long to offer legacy models for. *GPT-5 will seem smarter starting… August 8, 2025

The key takeaway is that paying subscribers will now have the choice between the new GPT-5 and the legacy GPT-4o. OpenAI has also committed to being more transparent about which model is handling a query and will monitor usage to decide how long to support older models.

The Tale of Two AIs: Personable vs. Precise

The core of the conflict lies in the stark difference between the two models. GPT-5, the latest and most advanced offering, was designed to be more accurate, reliable, and less prone to making things up. It comes in several variations, with ChatGPT automatically selecting the best one for the job.

However, for many users, technical capability isn't everything. They prefer GPT-4o—where the "o" stands for "omni"—for its distinct personality. This model was known for infusing responses with humor and a conversational flair that made interactions feel more natural and engaging. In contrast, GPT-5 is often perceived as formal, sterile, and straight-to-the-point, even when prompted for a more playful tone.

The sentiment was so strong that users even started a petition to bring back GPT-4o.

The Cost of Companionship: GPT-4o Now a Premium Feature

While the return of GPT-4o is a victory for its fans, it comes at a price. Access is now exclusively for ChatGPT Plus subscribers, who pay $20 per month. This move places a model that was free just days ago behind a paywall, a solution that is unlikely to satisfy everyone who voiced their displeasure.

A Word of Caution on AI Friends

The passion for GPT-4o highlights a growing trend of users forming deep connections with AI, with some on Reddit calling it their "soul companion" or "best friend." While the desire for connection is human, experts, including Sam Altman himself, have pointed out the privacy and dependency risks of using AI as a therapist.

Research has suggested that over-reliance on AI can negatively impact critical thinking and potentially increase feelings of loneliness. Even ChatGPT is programmed to suggest users take a break after prolonged interaction—advice that seems more relevant than ever.
