ChatGPT Study Mode Tool Or Trap For Students
Generative AI is rapidly becoming a part of everyday life, from our search engines to our classrooms. For students, AI platforms like ChatGPT have presented a powerful but controversial shortcut for schoolwork, capable of generating entire essays or solving complex math problems instantly. In response to growing concerns about academic integrity, OpenAI has launched a new "Study Mode," aiming to position its technology as a learning aid rather than a tool for cheating. Here’s a breakdown of what this new feature entails and whether it lives up to the hype.
What is ChatGPT's New Study Mode
Unlike its standard function that provides immediate answers, ChatGPT's Study Mode is designed to guide students through a problem-solving process. The goal is to encourage active learning and critical thinking. According to a statement from OpenAI, the feature uses "guiding questions that calibrate responses to their objective and skill level to help them build deeper understanding."

Developed in collaboration with teachers and pedagogy experts, Study Mode is intended to foster curiosity and provide supportive feedback. Robbie Torney, Senior Director of AI Programs at Common Sense Media, noted, “Instead of doing the work for them, study mode encourages students to think critically about their learning. Features like these are a positive step toward effective AI use for learning.”
The Catch: Is It Still Just ChatGPT?
Despite the promising premise, there are significant concerns. An MIT Technology Review report revealed that Study Mode isn't a separate, academically trained tool. Instead, it’s the standard ChatGPT with a conversational filter. This means it still draws information from the entire web, including unreliable sources like Reddit and Tumblr, alongside academic papers.
Furthermore, users on the Technology subreddit have pointed out major flaws. One user found that it “still spoonfeeds you the answers” and can provide incorrect information, then base follow-up questions on that flawed answer. This highlights a persistent issue with chatbots: they can be confidently wrong, making it difficult for a student to verify the information without prior knowledge. Others noted that the protective guardrails are easy to bypass, as students can often just ask the tool to provide the answer directly, a process known as “jailbreaking.”
How Teens Really Use AI for School
A recent SheKnows survey of teens aged 14-20 found that 84 percent use AI primarily for homework help. While most teens agree using AI on a test is cheating, only 12 percent feel the same about using it for homework.
Insights from the SheKnows Teen Council reflect this reality. Clive, 16, admitted, “Teachers don’t really realize how much you can use AI for yet.” Sophie, 17, observed that it's become normalized in her school for students to simply copy and paste assignments into ChatGPT. Lilla, 17, uses it for technical subjects like math but is against using it for creative writing, feeling it diminishes creativity.
In a separate discussion, Clive bluntly stated, “I fully feel like it’s cheating, but also, like, I completely use it for everything.”
The Verdict: A Tool for Conversation
This over-reliance on AI is concerning, especially as research shows that students using ChatGPT for writing tasks exhibit lower brain engagement compared to those who don't.
While ChatGPT's new Study Mode may not be the definitive solution to AI-assisted cheating, it serves an important purpose: it opens the door for crucial conversations between parents and their teens. By encouraging the use of AI as a tool to enhance learning rather than replace it and teaching them to question the accuracy of its output, we can help students navigate the evolving technological landscape responsibly.
