In a quiet but significant update, Microsoft has equipped its AI assistant, Copilot, with an advanced multi-file analysis feature, bringing a powerful ChatGPT capability to both the web and Windows 11 platforms for free. Previously, while Copilot could handle up to 20 files in a single message, it processed each one in isolation. This new enhancement allows Copilot to read and synthesize information across multiple documents simultaneously.

Microsoft has confirmed that Copilot can now analyze up to three files together. This ability to "connect the dots" between documents unlocks a new level of productivity and was one of the most requested features from the user community.

A Game-Changer for Productivity and Analysis

The practical applications for this feature are vast. Imagine you're in the middle of a job search. You can now upload your resume along with two different job descriptions and ask Copilot to analyze how your skills align with each role, identify potential gaps, or even help tailor your application.

This cross-file reasoning extends to other complex tasks. For example, you could upload a travel budget, a proposed itinerary, and a list of luggage contents to have Copilot spot inconsistencies, suggest cost-saving measures, or optimize your route. Since Copilot leverages GPT-5 Thinking for free users (with some limits), it can now apply this powerful reasoning across your documents.

Supercharging Your Studies with Multi-File Support

This new capability is particularly impressive when paired with Copilot's "Study and Learn" mode. By activating this mode (found under the "+" menu), you can transform Copilot into a personalized study assistant.

In a test, three separate study documents were uploaded, and Copilot was asked to create a practice quiz based on the combined information. The AI seamlessly processed all three files to generate an interactive, flashcard-based quiz directly within the chat interface.

As you answer the questions, Copilot provides your score and offers detailed explanations for each answer, making it a phenomenal tool for students and lifelong learners.

Creative Uses and Other Recent Upgrades

The potential doesn't stop with text documents. You could snap a photo of a bookshelf, upload it with images of other book covers, and ask Copilot to identify the titles, organize them by theme, and suggest a reading order. It could even generate discussion prompts for your next book club meeting.

Beyond file analysis, Microsoft has also been upgrading other aspects of the Copilot experience. The platform recently received a new audio expression feature that, unlike ChatGPT, uses Microsoft's own model to deliver a more natural and personal-sounding voice, which excels in tasks like storytelling.
