New Data Reveals ChatGPTs Pivot To Personal Use
A groundbreaking new study from OpenAI employees and university researchers reveals a fascinating shift in how we use ChatGPT. While its overall use is skyrocketing, the data suggests it's becoming less of a workplace tool and more of a personal assistant integrated into our daily lives.
A Shift from the Office to the Home
The research, which analyzed over a billion messages, shows a dramatic change over a single year. Daily message counts exploded from 451 million in June 2024 to an incredible 2.63 billion by June 2025. However, during that same period, the percentage of messages related to work plummeted from 47% to just 27%. The study authors note that this isn't because professionals are leaving the platform, but rather because existing users are changing how they interact with the AI, leaning more into personal applications.
The Most Common ChatGPT Tasks
So, what are people actually doing with ChatGPT? Nearly 80% of all interactions fall into three main categories: seeking practical guidance, looking for information, and writing assistance. The task of 'seeking information,' which directly competes with traditional search engines like Google, accounts for a solid one-fifth of all use cases. This highlights ChatGPT's growing role as a primary source for answers and explanations.
How ChatGPT Compares to Rivals
The study also provides interesting comparisons to other AI models and usage patterns. Contrary to some perceptions, coding is not a primary use for ChatGPT, making up only 4% of messages. This is a stark contrast to a separate study on the rival Claude LLM, which found a third of its use was dedicated to coding. Similarly, researchers found that using ChatGPT for therapy or companionship was less common than other studies on generative AI have suggested.
A More Diverse User Base
ChatGPT's audience is rapidly diversifying. The significant gender gap that existed initially has now been completely eliminated. While early adopters were estimated to be 80% male, the user base had reached a near 50-50 split by June 2025. The platform's usage also continues to grow faster in low- and middle-income countries, and while it still skews towards younger users, the age gap is narrowing.
The AI Co-Pilot in the Workplace
For the tasks that remain work-related, ChatGPT is being used more as a 'co-pilot' than a 'co-worker.' Instead of replacing roles, it acts as a support tool across various occupations. Common professional uses include obtaining and interpreting information, documenting findings, and assisting with creative problem-solving and decision-making.
